I'm listening to 'O Children' crying my eyes out right now, so sad that his son has died:

as a parent my heart goes out to him and his family, I can't think of anything more painful for a family to go through than the loss of a child

What a question, really!

Do you know his music? This alone can make you cry...and if you really like someone, even if you don't know him, you can feel something one calls sympathy...well you probably don't.

Well to be fair, you can't truly like someone unless you actually know them. Otherwise it's at best extraordinarily superficial. However, sympathy should be felt due to the fact that he's a human being with a dead son.

of course I sympathise ... what an assertion, really!
I sympathise with any human being who lives to see their children die (and that goes for any human being, not just celebs)

nevertheless ... I'm curious why a grown man would be 'crying his eyes out' about this situation if he's not related somehow. I mean, I can see why an adolescant might get worked up about it... (see: Kurt Cobain etc)

But there different levels of empathy. Some people cry after watching Sarah mclachlan commercials with puppies and others merely feel slightly moved by it. I think getting worked up by everything that happens in the world would probably make someone absolutely miserable 24/7. Doesn't someone have to learn to prioritize these types of things to simply function day to day? I know I have to.

It's not a case of that, it's just as a parent I can relate in the first place, but also that I was thinking of how it must feel for him and his family while I played some of his music, which in itself is emotional (as intended) and it touched a nerve. It's not going overboard to be touched by others' feelings and situations, it's part of what makes us human.

I have to agree with aMUSEd on this.

When Bob Geldof lost his wife, then his daughter, it was sad days.

This is someone who had done so much for so many and yet, the tragedy of loosing both his wife and daughter was very sad indeed.

Empathy is a good thing....
