Hi everyone, after a few months break I'm back, I just couldn't skip Charlatan, this must be my favorite freeware synth ever! So easy to use, simple but still surprisingly flexible! And easy on the CPU.
Anyway, here's my entry. I followed Charlatan's example and kept it simple, no weird chord progressions or time signature changes this time...
https://soundcloud.com/formfisch/fese-r ... -charlatan
36 Instances of Charlatan2, all sounds by me.
Made in Cubase 6.5 with Cubase plugins (EQ, Delay, Compressor, Limiter, Maximiser, EnvelopeShaper, Gate) and freeware plugins (TAL Reverb-4, TAL Dub-Delay-2/3, Flux Stereotool, IVGI, MJUCjr, SlickEQ, TDR Feedback Compressor, Flux StereoTool, GClip, SPAN)

Made my submission for this challenge. a1wend1l - Copernican (OSC #77)
https://soundcloud.com/aiwendil/a1wend1 ... can-osc-77
Only used 6 instances of Charlatan for this. There's some reverb on the hat, the 'clap' and the mid-tone. Otherwise just eqing, compression and some panning all in Cubase.

Some more tweaks - oh yes! Moved the snare from left to right (was placing as a drummer-centric rather than audience-centric point of view - my bad!). Also, eq-d some top end off the snare and the harsher solo instruments. Hope you can hear an improvement. Thanks for listening and having patience with me whilst I refine my track via comments and help from the many great musicians on here.
My aim is to please and make you smile.

OK, I totally did a thing. Didn't have a ton of time to spend on it, but it's a little more filled out than my last entry.
9 instances of Charlatan, Thrillseeker LA and Loudmax on kik, epicverb on drum mix, TAL Reverb on the strings, BootEQmkII, Thrillseeker LA on the Bass, DensitymkII and Loudmax on the master.
Enjoy!

I finally updated my track...added some toms and went brutally into the mix, taming bass, side chaining around, trying to moderate everything after I've listened to it on my new headphones (AKG K240). Man, was it brutal before.

A total of 39 instances now... all patches from scratch. Rest of info is still in the earlier post:

I smell a top 5 finish. Reminds me of the good old days. Don't you DARE touch this thing again or I'll have to get assassins on your ass.Taron wrote:I finally updated my track...added some toms and went brutally into the mix, taming bass, side chaining around, trying to moderate everything after I've listened to it on my new headphones (AKG K240). Eeeeek, don't jinx it!

Mixing really, really is a tough thing, especially as I just don't have the proper experiences. It's most sensitive to how you monitor things as long as no other "established" reference is around and even then. I'm afraid I might've plucked the balls off of my track, but I most certainly don't want that. However, I think I've learned a massive amount since I've started to join you guys here. Not sure how many rounds it will take until I gain some solid clarity about the engineering part. Here's a little bit on what I've tried on this one:
- limiter on drum buss
- limiter on kick itself
- limiter on bass
- sidechain compression on bass with kick as "trigger"
- SPAN to check for overall balance of frequencies. Cutting down 20hz (harsh) and lower and 20khz and higher (soft cutoff), mildly boosting mid and upper mid sections.
- EQ and limiter on master
- slight sidechain compression on main pad against bass as "trigger"
- Checking individual tracks for their primary frequency spectrum saturation and adjustment of peaks to fall into balance.
- controlling stereo field with cross delays to create a more solid spacial arrangement.
- only very few instruments have their own reverb for sound purposes, rather than integration.
Beyond the shadow of a doubt, all this could really use a lot more scrutiny and even more monitoring experience to avoid unpleasant peaks or confusions/convolutions, but... baby steps!

Oh
...danged, DF doesn't exist anymore (diffuse field). Mine have no flat frequency response as far as I can tell, haha, but they're definitely alright!
THANKS! Congrats to you for still having the DF version!
