Software is finally starting to show its true value as an impermanent solution, a product with a perpetually unpredictable lifespan. This is why I loathe the disingenuous comparisons to hardware and the treatment of software as if it were a product of equal value; it never has been. When it was novel, software was grossly overpriced. Today, there is no need to spend hundreds of dollars on any of the stuff we need--even though there are some who still will.

After the incessant price gimmicks popularized by Waves and IK Multimedia, I made a commitment to seriously reduce the amount of money and investment I will put into new products that are virtualIzed (i.e. software emulations). If you commit to spending less, or find comparable solutions in freeware, you will be less hurt when this happens again

I, too, have a few hundred dollars wrapped up in this product; however, I wrote this experience off as a final lesson learned. If I continue to drop obscene amounts of money on something that can become obsolete without warning , I can only be angry with myself when it inevitably fails
This is very well said, and IMO great advice!

At bare minimum, if you spend, be aware that it can become obsolete and worthless.

So many of the developers/companies we love are comprised of just a single person and through the years we have seen how they are all quite human, susceptible to sickness, injury, accidents, death and yes, even an occasional sale to Apple!

These are things out of our control as buyers, but they should influence our future buying choices.

Um I was never good at sarcasm....

My post was to be a bit sarcastic. Sorry for the confusion. If you look at any of my other posts you see that I am not a complainer. Heh.

Yes they did give us time to make an adequate backup and I did that (I do have the full library sans one). I hope that it is usable for awhile, given that Windows 10 is out in a few days.

The one surprise is that Apple didn't just buy us as part of the deal. They would be starting with a huge loyal fan base that would have continued to use their products for a long time.

Oh well. And again, my previous post was apparently a poor attempt at sarcasm.

Although a class action lawsuit....naaah.

Why do people talk like the software no longer works when it clearly does? I get why people are bummed, but I don't get why there are so many comments like the software no longer works.

I take it with a grain of salt.

There has always been the prophets of doom running around totally convinced that once the day comes it will go all to poofda, almost along the same lines of what we were warned when Kore2 was discontinued. The software works flawlessly still here too BTW

I'm not bummed the software doesn't work - I'm bummed that I thought I was investing in a platform, and was very excited to upgrade to Alchemy 2 as it was supposedly about to be released. I purchased sound packs in preparation, and even let my "camel audio bucks" stack up in the hopes of using it the day Alchemy 2 was released. I was investing in a platform and planning for the future, which I yet again have learnt is DUMB! Only buy things you need to use that day, and dont think you are investing in a platform. Lesson learned..... unless its spectrasonics.

*Huge*? Um... you might want to relook at those numbers.

I expect higher numbers of people buy iPod Shuffles (an old, legacy product that mostly no one cares about anymore) in a weekend than the number of existing Camel customers...

Jace-BeOS wrote:You wonder if "no warranty" is normal?? Have you not been reading any software license agreements EVER??? It has almost ALWAYS been this way. The only piece of software I saw have an actual warranty was something from the early 1980s, and that only covered something like "within a reasonable degree of functionality" or something like that.

Yes, the software industry has pretty much ZERO accountability and has pretty much always been that way. By all means start fighting about it, but the battle against EULAs was lost decades ago. I think the DMCA or the patriot act or other such evil shit in the USA actually made the wretched EULAs get considered actual binding contracts (which they never were before but almost noone ever challenged them, mostly because they didn't read them and those who did read them knew nothing about contract law).
Very interesting. I must admit I never read a software license agreement.
Website TOSs have held up in US courtrooms as of recently.

For the product placement and usage...HUGE! You are mixing apples and oranges. Two different markets, two different targets.

So again, I correctly assert that they have a huge user base that they have overlooked as potential for future related products. They could have had my money for sure...and from what I have read on every page, a whole lot of others.

Ok, let's stick to the same market - Logic's installed userbase is orders of magnitudes greater than Camel's, and Logic's userbase is a drop in the bucket for Apple who don't really care about them either.

You may think you have some value to Apple, but it's imo rather naive...

They didn't want the synth as a standalone product. There's no reason to even consider buying the customer base.

Um nope still not same market. There are TONS of users of DAWs that do so only to record external sources such as live, band, vocal, guitar, singer/songwriter. I am talking about the base of users that regularly purchase VST's, and no other market. Keep on the same market please. And again, HUGE...

Otherwise, WHY purchase Camel to begin with? Oh yea technology.

Of course I have no value to Apple, otherwise they would still support Alchemy. I am merely a disgruntled customer.

Stop reading so much into my posts. I drink 85% of my days. So go find a girl and have fun with this.
