Introducing T-RackS Stealth Limiter

The loudest, most transparent and affordable peak mastering limiter available

Image
Introducing T-RackS Stealth Limiter, a new ultra-transparent mastering peak limiter available now in T-RackS Custom Shop. A versatile secret weapon of a mixing and mastering tool, it allows producers, engineers and musicians to turn up the loudness of a mix while still maintaining a clean sound with plenty of dynamic range and sonic breathing room.

Sonic integrity at higher dBs — Dynamic, transparent & loud
T-RackS Stealth Limiter is a new kind of processor for the final peak limiting stage of the mastering process. The past few decades have seen volume levels of produced audio rise at an alarming rate. Loudness of mixed and mastered audio material has become a de-facto standard for contemporary music production. To achieve a level of competitive loudness, producers and engineers have had to employ methods of extreme compression and limiting that, though they make a mix louder, also cause residual distortion, sonic flatness and a loss of overall emotion. T-RackS Stealth Limiter has been designed to prevent the ill effects of extreme compression and limiting by retaining sonic clarity and dynamics yet achieving the desired loudness level — something other limiters and compressors just can’t do.

A stealth weapon
An impressive increase in loudness without the discernable effects of compression — it’s a dream come true. Simply put: It’s the most transparent, clear and loud software mastering peak limiter available, and it’s able to provide this thanks to its smart level-tracking algorithm. It works like a sonic ninja, reducing levels below the volume ceiling moment-to-moment instead of applying traditional look-ahead envelope-based fast-attack compression. It doesn’t sound like a compressor, and that’s because it isn’t one.

Inter-sample algorithm
The secret to T-RackS Stealth Limiter’s invisibility is in its inter-sample peak-limiting algorithm. This works differently than traditional mastering processes, which suppress spikes above the volume ceiling by employing hard limiters or clippers. These traditional processes are only able to ensure a stable digital level; they don’t guarantee undistorted playback once the music goes through conversion, which can create an analog waveform that exceeds the threshold and introduces unwanted distortion.

T-RackS Stealth Limiter’s inter-sample peak limiting algorithm gets around this by predicting the converted analog waveform of the digital source. It ensures that the final converted audio will only very rarely exceed the set ceiling. The result? All the loudness, but without a perceptible loss in dynamic range. This is particularly useful considering that modern music is heard on different devices and services that utilize compressed formats like MP3 and AAC.

Easy-to-use and extremely versatile
T-RackS Stealth Limiter sports straightforward controls and intuitive features that make using it a quick and easy process. Its input knob can be used to set the desired loudness, and its output ceiling knob can be used to adjust the output level. And, for more advanced uses, it comes with 4 different modes of operation for fine-tuning.

The basic mode is TIGHT. This offers neutral limiting that respects the natural sonic dynamics of the source material as it increases loudness. The BALANCED mode offers a similar level of transparency, albeit while introducing a subtle amount of dynamic compression. HARMONICS 1 can be used when a bit more color is required. When used, it imparts a sense of dimension and pleasant coloration that can make a mix sound and feel more analog. And finally, HARMONICS 2 can be utilized when more sonic character is desired. It can deliver a thorough boost of gritty and punchy analog character.

In addition to its various modes, T-RackS Stealth Limiter also comes equipped with an infrasonic filter that can be used to cut out unwanted sub-bass frequencies that might otherwise put excessive workload on the limiter. Easy monitoring is provided via its on-board unity gain monitoring function, which allows for a quick comparison between the processed audio with or without the accompanying volume boost.

T-RackS Custom Shop — A one-stop studio shop

TheoM wrote: I can tell you now, it is the loudest limiter i have ever heard (put it against barricade when pushing it hot, and it literally sounds WAY louder), but at those loudness levels it's 50% distortion and very very unpleasant to listen to. Certainly nothing I was expecting after reading the press release. I know you appreciate honesty Peter so I am giving it to you. At levels where this can "win" the "loudness" war, cause it does sound so loud, it's actually unusable. So far i tried it on pop, rock, and edm mixes.
Not very 'stealthy' then

This is "just what the doctor ordered". I can't wait to try it. I'm sure it will be top-quality given many of IK's recent releases are top-quality. It's good to see a mastering plugin released for the T-RackS collection, after all T-RackS started out being primarily a mastering suite and still is suppose to be mastering oriented to some degree. But T-Racks mastering plugins have been its weak point since almost all sound horrible and the mastering side largely has had little focus and investment from IK. MasterEQ 432 is amazing but the multiband plugins in T-RackS sound really crappy. Hopefully IK will continue to strenghthen up in T-RackS's mastering department. I've been looking to replace Izotope Ozone 5 and this new IK limiter may play a significant role in me eventually selling Ozone. Congradulations Peter and the rest of IK, I'm sure this will be another amazing plugin since IK is a top company out here.
T2 Icarus is a must. SonicCore SCOPE is the most. As heart of studio it has my vote, cause XITE-1 is all she wrote.

That sounds like an issue and completely abnormal (and opposite of the typical results) behavior in what you are experiencing, since in our audio demos and others testing it this is very transparent and as intended it does the opposite and does not destroy the audio at all. Maybe our team can walk through some things with you to see what is going on, Theo? Thanks.

Of course, if a song needs +6dB to get to a commercial high-loudness level and one pushes it up around 10 dB more - of course it will sound distorted as hell in any case.

Audio demos can be found at: http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/tr ... iter-audio

And anybody can of course use the demo version themselves to see how transparent Stealth Limiter is even at incredibly high levels.

Edit: For Theo since I was a bit generalized in my last response I also let the team know of your experiences, and here's a bit more detail and a suggestion that may help get you into the right space and the expected results with this limiter:
- In no way the Stealth Limiter distorts more than the competition. For EQUAL boosts it distorts LESS than competition. Guaranteed.

- If you hear distortion we think you’re pushing the limiter up to hell crazy unusual levels that are of no use.

- We ask if you can please post both your unprocessed mix and your Stealth Limiter version.

From there I think we can understand what is happening on your end.

Of the clips in the link, Stealth does sound the best, IMO. I'll be trying this out.

i don't really use limiters at all so i probably won't even try it, but i hope more modules are coming :)
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.
