Asking (local) DJs to play my track

I have finished a tech/prog house track. Now I want to ask some local DJs, who I have not yet met before, in my town/area to play the track at gigs. Would they appreciate that? Do I have to fear they might steal my work?

In my opinion this is a good way of promoting my music. An alternative is to send the track to labels, but then you are one of many.
