Now that you mentioned, I think it may have something to do with it that I bought bitwig month a go.. When I fire up Reason, usual session ends up with around 10 song ideas/started songs, loads of new sounds and 1-2 songs finished/nearly finished (usually nearly finished.. I find it really boring to add crashes and sweeps etc fx).hebb wrote:If you think there's a problem here somewhere, try to get to the root of it. There must be a reason you lost your inspiration.
Damn you bitwig

Interesting. I had an opportunity to be home alone for an hour. I opened up reason.. Well the formula would be something like:
Home alone + Reason = Instant song
Though I wasn't able to finish it in that hour but wow. 1000 volts inspiration.

I think I figured out my problem. I enjoy making sounds and noises etc. Like I just made a keys that sound just like some broken toy and beautiful melody with that. Anyways.. I need some sound for inspiration to make a loop. That's easy part. The real issue comes when I need to make a full song. Seems like that I don't have anykind of skill to "tell a story" or build a full song with all it's transitions and stuff.
When I think "I'll make a sound", I start my DAW and make a sound and I'm having fun. When I think "I'll make a song".. I go to facebook.

So ... make some music without transitions and stuff. There's enough formula EDM out there to last a lifetime as it is. Doing what you're good at is more fun anywayLejurai wrote:Seems like that I don't have anykind of skill to "tell a story" or build a full song with all it's transitions and stuff.
... and turn the internet OFF when you're working on music. My music computer only goes online to authorize / register my music software.

Fortunately I've lost all interest in TV/Movies. Unfortunately I always have shifting goalposts. I created a setlist of 30 songs I wanted to do one right after another and now that I've got 25 down I'm less then interested in the last 35 and I want to go in an entirely different direction (jazz to classic rock) just because rock is easier to play and I'm getting lazy.
Set yourself some goals, it helps.
Goal - I'm going to spend X minutes a day playing scales even if I already know them.
Goal - I'm going to learn one song from beginning to end and be able to faithfully commit to it.
Goal - I'm going to play something in public (even if it's only for your mom)

If you somehow convince yourself that you have no mind (or even better, no head) when sitting down with your synths, then you'll never lose inspiration.
Curious results also happen if you find yourself missing other body parts too.
Failing that, try writing out an arrangment on paper without going anywhere near a computer or synth.
Truly, I find I'm more creative when plotting with pen and paper.

I have similar problems. I make many shorter patterns and stuff, but I never finish anything off, i.e. I never complete a full tune. I guess one of the reasons is that I simply don't have as much musical talent as I wish I had. When I was young and nothing of that modern stuff was available to me for financial reasons, I thought I could make music if only I had the gear. But I suppose that is not the case, I lack the vision for a complete song. And I guess it is OK that way, we can't all be good musicians or composers. Just like not everyone is a painter just because they have paint and brushes.
Another problem is that I am older and I have read that creativity, just like most anything else, naturally decreases from 35 or so on.
Yet another problem is that I have a high standard when it comes to the music I like to listen to, so I am always unhappy with the stuff I make myself. When I listen to a good song, it almost depresses me and I don't even feel like starting my DAW and doing something.
And I am alone, so everything has to come from me, which it doesn't.
Lyrics for instance, I don't want to make instrumental music, but without lyrics and a good singer, what else am I do make?
Since I am alone, I also like forums in order to stay in touch with the world. So I spend too much time writing posts on forums - not just KVR -, while I know that at the end of the day 99% of what people write on forums doesn't matter to anyone.
The summer heat doesn't help, either. It makes me tired and lazy. I can't wait for the rainy season to arrive
The only good thing is that I have a real job and don't need to sell any music. That pressure would totally destroy me.

Just chiming in to say that i can well understand this kind of lac of motivation and insipiration... fiddling way too little with my DAW and plugins. Slowly come to think that welath, anbundance, and simply emptiness of the mind has to do with it. As fluffy wrote, that paired with a lack of musical talen and inspiration. And the will to just start somewhere, without producing chartbreakers right from the start.
Guess i just have to give myself a kick in the butt one day, and just get a start, make something simple, or, rather, do a remix of a track rather than try to create something entirely own for the beginning. Tomorrow. Or so.

Check this out, tell me if it resonates with you:Lejurai wrote:I have 6-8 hours a day that I can make music. Earlier, it wasn't even enough but now, the last F***ING MONTH, I've spent that 6-8 hours sitting here or at facebook.. After wasting that 6-8 hours, I disgust myself and I hate myself. Next day I do all that again.
Now I'll start to play starcraft for couple of hours, then I hate myself and go to sleep.
Also check out some of the interviews of people who've been on the course he runs on his YT channel.
I did it about a year and a half ago and now at the stage where i've released a track on distrokid, i'm aiming to start sending to labels soon but i haven't quite hit the goal of finishing 4 tracks a month but i've gotten better through finishing tracks and applying various techniques (a lot of it to with the brain and nlp) but musics a priority before all else unless i'm having a bad day evn then i try and do 15 minutes or brush up on something.

You guys aren't alone. I find I'm -most- creative when I'm busy and don't have much time actually. I value the time more then I think.musikmachine wrote:Check this out, tell me if it resonates with you:Lejurai wrote:I have 6-8 hours a day that I can make music. I have the same issue as the OP. Good advice here. Excuse me while I dial in to the latest Country charts.masterhiggins wrote:Best thing to do is listen to music that you absolutely detest. It inspires you to make something much much better.
