Isn't Tori Amos' real name 'Kate Bush'?
Sorry, couldn't resist! I like Tori too. Her version of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' gave me dual respect.

She's naturally red, if that's what you mean?
I had a 'box lunch' at one of her concerts.

Basically I'm saying that you are missing the lighthearted sarcasm in my post.opiadream wrote:so basically your saying you can't tell the difference between influence and rip-offdeastman wrote:One more thought... I was just listening to the "Ladies of the Canyon" album again, and was reminded that Kate Bush is so obviously stealing from Joni MitchellI guess I'll have to burn my KB CDs now...
While I'm writing... all this discussion has made me go back and listen to a bunch of my Kate Bush collection, and... am I missing something important, or is "The Red Shoes" her worst album ever?
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

I've listened to quite a few now - the joy of P2P is that you can find rare stuff and remixes unavailable in the shops - found a load of live covers - mainly of Joni Mitchell, that I felt didn't really add anything to the originals apart from one Stevie Nicks song (Landslide). I'm coming round to liking some of them though. The ones I like best so far are:
Winter - (OK I know I didn't like it at first but I gave it another chance and it grew on me)
Crucify - sounds a lot like Kate Bush in places but I still like it
Drive (with Indigo Girls and some others) - sexy as f@#k - she is able to express her sensuality through her music in a way that reminds me of Kate Bush (again) but also Janis Joplin, Annette Peacock and Patti Smith - thats a big plus in my book.
Black Dove (also found a version with Sarah MacClachlan) - lovely and moving song, one of my favourites so far - great piano playing (almost sounds microtonal)
Silent all these years (with Leonard Cohen) - pretty good
Professional Widow (Armand van helden remix) - really like this
Bachelorette (not a Bjork cover) - probably the most distinctive I've heard so far - I like it it reminds me of old German theatre songs or Tom Waits - many of her other songs, even those I like sound a bit similar
Siren - I like this but it reminds me a lot of Kate Bush again
I have a load more to get through, I can see myself keeping some of these.
and she IS gorgeous.

While I'm writing... all this discussion has made me go back and listen to a bunch of my Kate Bush collection, and... am I missing something important, or is "The Red Shoes" her worst album ever?I sort of liked her interpretation of the story of The Red Shoes, sort of like her take on Wuthering Heights, but in general I was very disappointed by that CD.
I agree about the red shoes too
I kinda fell off the fan-wagon on that one

I didn't like it either. You have to judge each album on its own merits - there are many artists I like but its not blind adulation and there are tracks and whole albums I dislike by most of them. Sometimes artists seem to go into a decline or dry period for a while. I'm not keen on many songs Joni Mitchell did after Mingus but Mingus and what came before was mostly brilliant. Same goes for Joan Armatrading after "Me myself I".opiadream wrote:it flew right over medeastman wrote:Basically I'm saying that you are missing the lighthearted sarcasm in my post.opiadream wrote:so basically your saying you can't tell the difference between influence and rip-offdeastman wrote:One more thought... I know what you mean about all the people you named.
it's kinda scary actually
I tend to believe that most artists hit a peak
(except for madonna who's just been flat-lining with an entourage and DJ crutches since the beginning)
and then roll down the other side of that hill with the occasional spurt of genius.
