Hmm... Electra I guess. I'd prefer Gladiator but Electra can do more. Or maybe FAW Cicle.

Different synths are better at different things. I don't think there's a perfect synth that does it all. But there are some very good ones out there. :tu:

I will take the Lord's name in vain, whenever I want. Hail Satan! And his little goblins too.

Compared to those two, just get the gold standard and buy the synth Hive and Spire aspire to be - Sylenth1.

Rule of thumb also: If it's cheap, it's not very popular, if it's expensive it is popular, for a reason. Might not apply all the time, but generally it does in my experience.
What?

There are many, many free synths that absolutely rock!
Name some free plugins which sound as good as the likes of Spire, Electra2, Sylenth1, Monark, Diva... and which offer the same functionality and versatility, good luck. Before going payware i used about anything there is, free- or magware. It really isn't comparable. Charlatan, Tyrell N6, TAL-Noisemaker all sound nice, but they're very simple synths. Dune and Synth1 are quite versatile and functional, but lack a bit in sound quality compared to the newest payware stuff. IMO, payware is a step ahead in every way, i mean, i wouldn't shell out money if it wasn't so. If you found for yourself you can live and work with freeware, fair enough. I can't. There isn't one really good free reverb e.g. Believe me, i looked for it... there's not even a good reverb in my hosts.

So, because they didn't work for you that does not mean they cannot work for anybody.

It depends on what you want to do with them, type of music, and how deep you get into their functions.

Different strokes for different folks.

My one and only synth currently :D

I would agree, but just like Hive, Sylenth is only a subtractive synth, it is great at what it does, but it only does so much, which is considered little by many today.

some people say some synths are not cool because they only use presets. try to avoid presets. once you master synthesis (i don't at least yet) i'm sure you can make gems just from about anything out there...it's all about the player not just the violin. you can own the best synth and still make crappy music.

The difference being that a violin does what a violin does. But try to get a supersaw out of OnePingOnly. :P

By the way, why don't you like Serum?

Between Spire and Hive, I'd go with Spire. However, if your goal is an all-around synth, I'd definitely say Zebra 2.

I've narrowed it down to Spire and Hive. I tried Serum but don't like it.
What do you recommend?
Spire and Hive are too EDM focused to be all-round synths, if you really want versatility you should get Zebra 2.

Post

Spire is much closer to an allround synth though, with it's synthesis and modulation options. But the OP should really state what kind of music he wants to do. If he wants to produce EDM music, then Hive and maybe Nexus will do. Even though, again, the thought of a "does-everything" synth is an illusion IMO. You'd at least want some versatility, also in sound, so i'd really aim for at least 2 or 3 synths all in all. Some are more snappy than others, some do bass better than others... some do that kind of bass better, some that. Some do the wub-wub very well like Massive. It really depends.

+1 (and maybe add the HZ option).

I love my BigTick Rhino.
