Roland JV 1080

Did any of you listen to the sounds yet?
You know. The sounds. What we use to make music with. Those frequencies. Energy.

I had a quick listen. The content seemed to be concentrated mostly on the synth samples from the core JV and three of the expansion cards. From that set I only had the Vintage Synth one when I had a JV1080. It had some good VP330 sounds IIRC. However, I can't imagine these are any better than what's available from UVI, Best Service or Zero-G. The cards were what, 16 megabytes of samples, if that?

I can't say I've ever thought "if only I had the vintage synth samples from the JV1080..." There may be some more 90s retro stuff in there, but without a list of patches it's hard to know what Cluster have in that collection. And the beauty of the JV is how you use it as a module – combo sounds, four-part programs etc - rather than for the core sounds.

There is also the small point that if they had licensed the sounds from Roland, they would probably (have to) display that prominently with lots of trademark disclaimers.

I can't see what's the point of release the nude ROM content of a ROMpler from the 90s. Neither can I see me buying it, even if legal.

Now samples of "real" presets done with the modules - that's another story

The same applies to the sounds from the D-50 (which I have included in the V-Synth). The ROM sounds themselves are nothing special (I even dare to say that they are weak from today's standards). But the sound that "that" synth engine produces with them still has something special.

- sample out the ROM contents - easy
- market using original Brand - this is the contents of the Roland JV1080
- take the money

It's just a cynical way of using someone else's property, both intellectual and brand value, and reselling it as you own in order to make some easy money.

I have a Roland XV5080, and for some things it sounds gorgeous. In many ways I'd like some of it's sounds and facilities in my computer. It doesn't mean I'm going to bundle up all Roland sound recordings contained inside it and sell my "virtual Roland XV5080" as if it was my content to sell in order to make some easy money - because, apart from the legality of it, it's scummy.
