so, like the title says, im wondering how much i should pay for mastering. theres a few factors going on here..

first of all, this isnt so much about how much it normally goes for, but more what i should offer.

the guy im using is a friend...so i dont want to take advantage of the friendship and low ball him. i want it to be fair, but affordable. we have decided to go with a flat fee as opposed to per track or per hour. hell be doing 7 tracks. hes asked me to come up with a number that works for me and i have a feeling hell accept whatever i offer, us being friends and all.

hes not a "professional" engineer. this isnt something he does on a regular basis (for others) or as a side job. hes a guy whos been making music for a long time though, and pretty well knows what hes doing. i trust him to do a good job, and to that point hes already done one track. he listened to my input, made appropriate adjustments, and returned a track that sounded very good to me indeed. i feel he understands the genre im working with quite well, and more importantly i feel he understands me quite well when we talk about what im going for.

im on a fixed income and dont have a lot (hardly any) spare cash. now i realize this isnt his problem, but he kind of knows my situation. im not entirely sure i can offer something that is fair to him and affordable to me.

i know its possible to get it done for as little as $20 a track...but how good is that going to be?

as it stands now im thinking of offering $280 for the 7 tracks which breaks down to $40 a piece. a little high for me, but im trying to be fair.

thoughts?

As the old saying goes: you get what you pay for...I guess around 20 dollar per track is the lowest I would get, some online mastering services are around that digits.

50 dollar per track is a good price when the mastering engineer is experienced, but I myself coulnd't affort to spent around 500-600 bucks for a 10 to 12 track album - so I do my own mastering (unless I can expect high sales in the future when I'm famous...) ;)
