Physical Modelling synths

To my ears Electric (Ableton Live version of lounge lizard) is great, sounds as good or better than sample libraries and the playability is great.
Pianoteq also sounds great and for the small space it uses in the HD I can happily trade the small differences there are vs a big sample library, also it's more playable.
Collision (chromaphone) sounds good, but I have never get too deep in to it.
Mikro Prism sounds wonderfull, very hi fi, some day I would get the full version. I wonder if the new reaktor has some blocks based on Prism?
I think AAS should go further with string studio to achieve modeling similar to pianoteq and be able to use their Sttrings emulations in orchestral compositions.

It does mean something. But you are certainly right about the absurdness of modern patents, I have heard of it as well. But registering every ridiculous detail as a separate patent in order to stifle competition is particularly common in the US these days, more so than in Asia.Jace-BeOS wrote:My goodness... counting numbers of patents means nothing in determining the intellectual output of a nation or company. Patent business is killing creativity... and it's legal
(but the same could be said of the current copyright laws as well).
BTW: Just saw someone mentioned REaktor. Steampipe, which is a quite old ensemble for Reaktor (presente in the library since Reaktor 3, if I'm not mistaken) is a great PM of pipe based instruments (and we can recreate other sounds as well)

Curious... Never thought of Helix as a PM synth, rather a (very) flexible subtractive synth. There are a few other fantastic physical modeling Reaktor ensembles in the user library aside from Steampipe and Prism. Several are by the same Reaktor user (last name of Singer?). There's a fantastic bowed string ensemble and a fantastic and complex brass and winds instrument.
Reaktor is therefore a great place to play with PM, especially if you can build ensembles. There's not nearly as much premade PM stuff in the user library as I'd prefer (and even fewer premade parts in the factory library) did physical modeling, but there are a few superb pieces of work to experiment with.
I wish the new Reaktor 6 "Blocks" included physical modeling modules to experiment with. Ideally, each module would be a basic acoustic object with full access to the realworld parameters. This is where Tassman is slightly more user friendly. The PM modules in Tassman are prebuilt, ready to wire up, unlike in Reaktor, but they also lack control over the settings and don't really let you bend the models much at all (and Tassman's builder is mute, so building is that much more frustrating).
This constantly frustrates me: ease of use combines with too little flexibility, and great flexibility comes in user-unfriendly packages. I guess there aren't many (any?) deep math genius programmers that can ALSO think in a true user-friendly mode (usually they can't comprehend that others don't know what they know).
Ease of use is way more than skin deep. We get some beautiful looking tools, and some very powerful tools. But we rarely get beautiful, powerful, and straight-forward in one.
