I just upgraded to Cakewalk Home Studio XL V.2 about a week ago. Everything was ok until I hooked up my USB soundcard. It recognizes the input, but not the output! Under the Audio "general" tab, the USB card shows both input and output. This was never a problem with HS XL 2002. It always recognized the I/O automatically after I made the changes in the Audio menu. Grr. And here I bought the upgrade for the ASIO support. :?

It would probably be more helpful if you could say what type of system you have, what OS, CPU, etc.

It's a Compaq PC using Windows XP, 1.5 Ghz, 512MB RAM. The soundcard is an Edirol UA-5. What puzzles me is why it would work under a two-year old edition of Home Studio, but not the latest. Maybe there's a bug that Cakewalk hasn't made public? Their website talks about a patch for HS 2004, but not Version 2.

Hmmm..

Here's what I know, if it helps:

Compaq PCs are notorius for weird, non-standard bus mappings to their IDE/AGP slots. Make sure your card is in the right slot, then go to Sysinfo.exe to check that you aren't having any IRQ conflictions.

I use the same Edirol you do, just with the new USB PCR-1 keyboard (which has the UA-5 built in) and it is awesome - so it has super low latency via Edirol's ASIO drivers, the key mappings are generic midi so it works with 99% of all my VSTi, and the keys have that weighted feel and response I love.

But you really also have to make sure that you are using a USB2.0 slot. :)

Are you talking about the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller? I also see an Intel processor to AGP controller. The first is on PCI bus 0, device 31, function 1 with no conflicts. The other is on PCI bus 0, device 1, function 0 with no conflicts. I'm not sure what you mean by the "right" slot. I looked through the System devices list, and everything said "No conflicts".

I'm still in USB 1.1-land over here. I plan on getting a music-only computer (not Compaq) in about 6 months.

If no IRQ or other probs, maybe you need to talk with the card dealer/manufacturer. Have you checked out their support?

I wouldn't worry so much about having 1.1 devices - and properly configured PC should be able to handle both 1.1 and 2.0 well into the future because of all the legacy hardware out there written for the original spec.

2.0 is of course faster, but it shouldn't matter to a PC to run both.

Ok, I figured out the problem. The audio drop-down menu was set to "use default", which meant it kept trying to access my computer's built-in card. After I selected WDM/KS and restarted, it worked fine. Hopefully the ASIO driver installation will go smoothly. Sorry about that!
