the main reason why ms surface have none dedicated apps ecosystem is mainly because it can run existing win apps.

So obviously it doesnt push any third party dev to release dedicated apps for it.

What mainy peoples seem to forget is how the success of iOS brings new software editors with very smart new tactil UI apps and how it forces big companies to not ignore it.

It's a complety new OS that forces (because it's not just an option) to dev completely new apps with new rules concerning the UI something that won't happen windows or macos.

it's in a way the necessary sacrifice to get this creative and also profitable movement.

Something microsoft just totally miss by forgeting a crual thruth : human nature is lazy, it's only with limitation and new challenges that human kind reveals its creativity.

iOS9 with split screen, and more devs building in AU extensions will make this a great OSX extension.
AU extensions will probably be the bridge (or blurring) between OSX and iOS going forward.

From what I've read, the pencil is much higher res., and can be used sideways, so I'm avoiding getting caught up in the apples/oranges comparisons.

All cars have a steering wheel and 4 tires. Doesn't make them all the same.

Does it come with fans? Because my Surface Pro has them, and they sometimes blow rather noisly (in the silent night).

No, it is silent. It's like any other iPad (fanless), just larger and more powerful (and with four speakers). iPads don't get as hot as the Surface.

As far as I read, however, the next iOs should be able to load AU instruments and effects, right? This is interesting, considering the compatibility between GarageBand and logicX.

Marketing, would be my guess. The rumors of the iPad Pro had been flying around for months, and I expected it to be more hybrid-y, more like the Surface. It is really just a bigger iPad, though a more powerful one with twice the RAM of the current flagship (iPad Air 2).

I think it will be somewhat of a niche product, but I may be wrong about that. I can see it being very useful for graphical artists, designers, architects, due to the size and the stylus (I believe it will cut into Wacom sales). It may be good for students and academics also since it will display A4 PDFs without zooming. But it doesn't strike me as a media consumption device, but who knows!

Personally, I would use it for my completely hobbyist music stuff (same apps that I use on the Air 2), and for board gaming. At almost 13", it can actually replace a Go (Asian game) board without being too cramped!

I do wish it had an USB-C port at least, and ran OSX, but OSX (and OSX software) is probably worse than Windows when it comes to touch-suitability, so I can see why Apple didn't go there (yet?). iPad and iPhone are popular because of the apps that exist for it.

Haven't decided whether I'll get one, and I will definitely wait for news on the SP4 to see what that's like. Battery life is important to me for the tablet aspect of the device.

Why Pro? Simple, really. It'll be used by professionals. Doctors, engineers, graphic artists. Just because it doesn't fit your definition of "professional" doesn't mean it won't be used by other professionals. As far as I'm concerned, my iPad Air is a "Pro", because I use it daily at work for supporting users and administrating servers across the world.

because they have to find a word for their new product, like iphone S, ipad mini or ipad air, that's all.

And also because Apple people love to play with journalists and the peoples who still read or listen them.

What musician at all interested in using an iPad as an expressive musical instrument would drop big bucks on this version of the iPad Pro when it's likely that a future version will have the haptic feedback technology found in the newly announced iPhones?

I mean, I was all over the idea of a bigger screen, but it's like Apple announced the iPad Pro and at the same time literally showed us how much better the next version will be.

Agreed, it's an odd choice of product feature releases.

Well they released a Mac Pro without a retina display, and then released an iMac with one. So it's not like this hasn't happened before... And I have mostly ignored the retina iMac as an option, to wait for the pro to be updated with a pro display.

The iPad Pro though, I have been waiting for a product like that since day one of the iPads (and day one of the Wacom Cintique). You know that they'll release an updated Apple Pencil one year later that includes the eraser they left off the first generation, too.

But the iPad doesn't have the software for anything but light sketching. A Wacom tablet and full real software is still the way to go.
And if the software eventually comes to iOS, you still have to fit it into your workflow.

iPad Pro?
