I have no evidence that writer has anything to do with what FZ thought, or that he ever read any of it.experimental.crow wrote:man knew his Heinlein ...jancivil wrote:1986: frank-zappa-warns-of-fascist-theocracy (w. video)

Well, I didn't know about his work on the 1st Amendment. Good for him. 'Clever for the sake of being clever' means exactly what it says. I have no resentment against Uncle Frank, I just don't like him or his music very much, and, other than the acid trips listening to 'Just Another Band From L.A.,' and I'll go one further, 'Live at Fillmore East' about 32 years ago, the great majority of his stuff leaves me cold.jancivil wrote:Well, I think all of that is unfair and severe. He fought for the 1st Amendment, got up there and spoke to congress and fought in the media during all of that PMRC debacle. He considered running for POTUS later but found the Libertarian Platform nonsensical. He put out PSAs on the responsibility of voting and promoted that all during 1988 US tour. After the end of the Soviet, he promoted business in Eastern Europe and sought alliance until he pissed the PTB off by dissing Dan Quayle and he was yanked.Bombadil wrote: I just kinda became 'allergic' to musicians who really have nothing positive to offer, whether politically, spiritually, or even materially. All they can do is tear something down, without offering up any alternative. Also, being clever for the sake of being clever leaves me cold.
I would say that his music works for me in a spiritual way, typically. Clever for the sake of clever, what does that even mean. It doesn't sound better than resentment. I feel sure that he was emotionally invested in every bit of music he did. For me, you're doing exactly what you are on about, tearing something down with nothing really substantive to say, offering the discussion only pique and a bad vibe.
That said, I used to play 'Bobby Brown' whilst busking to help pay for college.

I like the works of FZ until he moved to the UMRK and started to produce pretentious crap.

The carpenters went to number one here with a damned cover. Calling Occupants was an amazing track initially released by Klaatu. The carpenters turned it into middle of the road bullshit...the general public has no taste

returning to that, my bad for being circular and tedious... but a musician of that calibre sitting around with nothing better to do than 'hey, I'll be clever just to be clever here' is a funny notion and not a sign of thoughtfulness, I think. I imagine that is supposed to apply to such as
which I find to be gorgeous and quite moving.
