Has anybody written preset files for using ns_kit wav samples with Jørgen Aase Cyber FREE or any other good free sampler?

Post

Why not use the soundfont version with something like RGC's free SFZ?

Post

Some claim that the soundfont format reduces the quality, including this soundfont creator http://www.hum.aau.dk/~bovbjerg/piano.html

So I think using the wav files together with a sampler would be the best free option.

Post

If that's the case then SFZ also uses SFZ format but it would need converting in some way.

The WAV files can be downloaded and used with the sfz format mapping that's on (linked from) the ns_kit site.

I'm not sure why a soundfont should be lower quality that the samples contained in it... Sounds like nonsense to me... (of course, different sample players may sound different..!)

I didn't know someone had done one already - that was quick.

No neither do I but it's not the first time I've heard this stated. Maybe what they mean is sf2 is a 16 bit format (usually - I don't know if it HAS to be) whearas wavs could be 24 or 32 bit.

uh!?

Soundfonts are just a file with mapping for the wavfiles in it!
If it sounds bad on a soundblaster, then i agree ;)
I think the Giga version sounds better (more like the original samplings - it doesn't get 'Emu's patented 8-bit interpolation!!! Go figure ;-)).
Whaa...t?

Besides, sfz has a switch where you can adjust sound quality (at least my sfz+ has)

Edit:nevermind

And sfz has this quality adjuster... However, this is a drum map so intopolation should not occur so it will have no effect (I think?)... The quality setting is for when the engine has to resample the sample to diffent frequencies (again, I think?). So you can use drums soundfonts at the lowest setting (I think!!?)

Can someone who knows what they're talking about reply!...

I think you're right! :)

When sfz was released i read all about the 'tecnique' they used in it. Uh, dont remember excacly (where did i loose my ability to spell???) .. Exactly? hmm.. I dont remember exactly, but my brain gave me a little endorphinrush when i read what you wrote, so it must be true :D

Being a bit interested in audio science I can say that it makes sense what you are saying.
In that case in should make any differnace what quality setting you use.

Quality should be the same in any sampler. i can't think of any reason why sf2 is inherently lower-quality either. The only thing negative about it for drum samples is that it splits stereo wavs into two mono wavs. In some samplers this will then require 2 voices per note.
