thanks for that info. I'll be sure to run the test tonight.Angus_FX wrote:So a friend with an i7-4790k just tested it.. 6.8 single-core Synthmark on that thing.
My poor old 2008 Mac Pro ("Harpertown" @ 2.8GHz) barely manages 1.5.
Still, shows the optimizations are doing what they're supposed to!

Not exactly. A machine reporting a score of 1 should be able to play any patch, realtime, 32-voices, 2x oversampled, in any DAW. It's roughly speaking a measure of how many instances you can run a big 32-voice patch with, on a single core, but YMMV. So for a machine scoring 3.3, you'd expect it to use about 25-30% of one core for 32 voices, 2x oversampling on a reasonably complex patch at a project sample rate of 44.1.Is 1 the baseline of how Strobe 1 performed, or what does the score represent?

Ah, that explains why the link was dead.Uncle E wrote:Hey guys, just a quick heads up that I've temporarily removed Strobe 2 and Upgrades from the site. I'll put them back up as soon as FXpansion makes the official announcement about it. Until then, let's just keep all the details between ourselves, shall we?

is this the final price? or it will be bumped later? (i'm referring to upgrade price)

Why is strobe 2 by itself so expensive? That's a price one would pay for something as capable as boundary pushing synths such as Zebra, Serum, and Spire. That's even more than Sylenth1! Wasn't SS1 something like 249$ for three synths and Fusor and 99$ bucks when on sale? I just do not see how it could cost so much. You have to realize, effort does not equal value, you must look at it without being biased as to how much work you put into it. Fx can price it however they like but good lord that's asking a lot. I was saving up money in my Paypal to get the upgrade (naively thinking it would be under 50$) but nope. I'm just going to put that towards Fallout 4 which will only be 59$ for something actually pushing the boundaries in the gaming scene (I'm sure anyone who has played the Fallout series would agree!) My point is, as a SS1 owner I really do not feel as if I would be missing much or anything at all really, at least not 80$ bucks worth. It seems as if the synth is pretty much the same (very basic va emulation) now with effects and an arp (something that Fusor is capable of) . I did see Angus say there is more to strobe 2 than just that, and I would like to ask, what is it? What would make a SS1 owner like myself, want to purchase this at a for 80$?

try the demo, see what you think
for me the morphing features and multiple preset bank are absolutely brilliant, great to have arp and fxpansion efx right there in the synth without having to load fusor
i'm using the demo, still waiting for JRR to send the serial

got the serial from JRR now, so thanks to JRR for that
the morphing feature on Strobe 2 really is sick, getting some proper f**ked up sounds

Oh, Strobe 2 pushes boundaries all right. Perhaps not the same ones as Spire, Serum or Zebra, but nevertheless it does.
The aim was to create the synth equivalent of a well-balanced guitar, a nice chef's knife or a good camera. It's not about the number of features, but how they work together.

IMO after some testing and trying to rebuild a Strobe 1 sound.. Strobe 2 sounds a bit different also with same oversampling and disabling all modulators. Also the the legacy presets sounding a bit different compared to the Strobe 1 presets...
Is there something changed under the hood which could produce a different sound?

Yes, it's almost a total rewrite under the hood.
Most noticeably, with Sub Link off, you get a very different behaviour with Stack/Sync/Detune.
There are some subtle tonal differences in the filter, before the gain compensated drive is taken in to account - and that, in turn, may mean a different level hitting the nonlinear Amp stage & sounding slightly different as a result.
Ranges and response tapers on a few of the controls are different as well, particularly the oscillator level faders which are now cubic taper rather than linear.
Most noticeably, with Sub Link off, you get a very different behaviour with Stack/Sync/Detune.

Yes, most noticeably in the lower range for bass sounds. It sounds more "crisp" while Strobe1 sounds "rounder" and more balanced.Angus_FX wrote:Yes, it's almost a total rewrite under the hood.
