May I have a definition of "hobby software", please?
Yeah, count me in on that too V.D.
Any software you are using in your hobby.. is software used in your hobby.

There is not 'hobby' software. There is just software. And you either use it commercially or you don't.

I didn't intend to say 'hobby software' but intended to say on software (for your hobby).

Yes I see that.. But why finance entertainment? That is what a hobby is.. Why not just save until you can buy it outright and then it is yours.. no catches.. no installment plans.. no owing anyone anything else.

I wouldn't finance a trip to the movies or a disney ticket.. same category.

Same category for who? Does that include the people here who make money from music. I don't think that would go over well for them. Them includes me.

Perhaps your definition describes more your own relationship with making music. Again, no offense.
If a professional needs to break a 180 dollar piece of software into monthly plans they are really scraping by...

Yes.. I don't think many professionals are going to do this if money is that tight..

I'm impressed, you seem to know a lot about music professionals: how much money they generally make, how they manage their budgets...
Ha ha suck it!

There is no question it sounds great. And if I didn't already own more synths than I should, I'd probably get it. I certainly like the way it sounds more than Rayblaster and Electra 2, which I definitely now feel are overpriced. But that was a long time ago when I got them and wasn't as savvy as I am now.
I forgot to mention this in my last post. I like the Tone2 stuff in particular Nemesis and Gladiator.

On paper at least... I feel that I should really really like Electra 2 but I just don't gel with the sound. I'm sorry to say. Rayblaster I don't use that much either - And besides the crazy unison CPU hit. I just don't 'feel' the sound for some esoteric reason that I can't quite put my finger on. :(

To me the Tone 2 synths are like Waldorf, in that they generally have a "Tone 2 sound" that can be very characterful, at least to my ears. Thus, it can be very much subject to personal taste.

I really like all the Tone 2s (I don't own Rayblaster), but for me Electra and Nemesis really stand out. The latter is my first choice whenever I go for an "FM synth".

But I'm off topic, perhaps it's just a symptom of being a desperate professional

In any case, I'm reading these back and it seems a bit rude of me.. I was thinking why would anyone that close to making ends meet finance yet another thing and weigh them down even further? In hindsight I should have asked why anyone would finance and just listen to them. Sorry!

Yeah but it came out wrong.. I'm good for that sometimes.

VitaminD wrote: But yes.. if it works for you.. then by all means.. it just seems to be a very dangerous mentality to get into.. installment plans for everything..
I don't use finance per se... I buy stuff when I have the cash.

But your statement is somewhat moot. Why wouldn't someone pay a monthly for a plugin alliance or Waves bundle? Especially if you trying to establish yourself. Or even a soft synth? Best of luck with it.

Want to buy a car? Finance... (for the majority). It's a very prevalent option in this day and age of the credit card. Being a musician is no different when it comes to gear.

As for spending money on a 'hobby'. If you've got it why not? My mates just bought a camera for 3 grand. Wouldn't do it myself but he's happy. Not sure how much he spends on everything else as well. Some hobbies are very expensive.

Dangerous mentality? So is smoking. That's a totally different thread.

But at the end of the day V.D. it's the individual's choice. I'm not trying to have a go, but I don't particularly agree with what you've said.

I might be as guilty of that as anyone here. No big deal.

I'm hitting the Strobe 2 manual, and it seems to me this synth is one of those where it's as deep as you want to go with it. I can see where it emphasizes quick sounds (and daresay I haven't heard many of these presets anywhere else), so yeah it would be quite a coup for musicians. But it certainly has the depth if you want to persue it. I don't see it as primarily being useful as a sketchpad like Nexus, there are too many interesting modulation capabilities (not a knock against Nexus at all, I own and use it all the time).
Ha ha suck it!

I've been guilty of it as well at times... :tu:

I have responses.. but in the sake of getting the thread back on track I will keep them to myself unless you want a PM of them, Robmobius. :)
