Why does no one do an Alchemy alternative?

It must be easy. It's just 1 or 0. That can't be hard.

Over priced....under powered....no way I'm buying a Mac just to run Alchemy. Not going to motivate Tim Crook to buy up more small developers and make them pump out Mac only software.V0RT3X wrote:Check this out. Sure it might be a bit pricey, but still... it's not that bad to get into a mac.

Its barely half of the picture though.glokraw wrote:I've never understood professionals who were vehemently

it's dirt cheap to buy a mac/alchemy setup, at any professional pay grade.

It's not only *a Mac* actually . It's a Mac plus :
*Learning/installing/maintaining in depth a new host ( Logic)
* Learning/Maintaining/Updating in depth a new computer/OS ( Mac ) (ie muchos dollars over years ) ( Possibly headache too -like a PC, no worries )
* Integrate a Mac into your audio network ( New pro soundcard/new adat cables etc etc)
* Integrate a Mac + all the above into your workplace ( physically, as long as Mac will not be lyophillised )
* Installing the *same other plugs* on your Mac ( because you wont want Alchemy alone )
* Not installing the same other plugs wich come with a single computer licence
You'll notice I sometimes mentioned *in depth*, because professional usually want to learn things *in depth*. Time is money. ( and is on my side yes it is but well .... limited )
So all this to compensate the value of a single plug ? ( I'm speaking money as value, not the artistic one. I enjoy a lot Alchemy ) Just making a bit of maths : Alchemy becomes very pricey with all this. Over time I think it could even become .... exponentially expensive.
So that : When I'm obliged to work with Macs, I work with Macs ( there's usually an assistant to take care of all the details ) When I'm on my own systems, I work with PCs. And Alchemy is still installed on one of them. When it wont work anymore, it wont work anymore. Basta.
So that .... I can live without Logic, and I can make music without Alchemy. As most people can live without a PC, and possibly some plugs that are only PC . It's really as simple as that.
note : Nothing against mac users, lot of my friends and customers are Mac lovers. actually, whether its made with a Mac or a PC, music is still music, and I've never found someone who asked ' this track ... was it made on a Mac or ... on a PC ??'

The best thing for me is: macbook pro and/or imac and OSX/WIN dual boot. This way I have both systems. Among other things, Windows runs perfectly on a mac. I've been doing like this for years now.

Long time ago my 12 year old son learned Logic in an afternoon...

That's because logic is designed for 12 year olds
I still use alchemy every now and again (mainly for the soundbanks) but I can get what I need from omnisphere 2, serum and realtor 6....other stuff just got better anyway....times moves on, alchemy hadn't been updated for some time anyway....

He's really go(o)d because when I teached Cubase to my students it took a cursus of 44 hours ( And after that I could still have showed them some other things for around the same amount of time )ksandvik wrote:Long time ago my 12 year old son learned Logic in an afternoon...
So my students were probably dummies
Otoh, I remember we were stranded in front of garage band with a rather famous composer a couple of years ago struggling to make -part of- a soundtrack- and we spent numerous hours to master the simple thing ( mostly to discover all the things we could not do with it ) . But well, you certainly learn more slowly when you're older

I was a Windows user since Windows for Workgroups 3.11. I thought it sucked. That's called thinking differently?
I'm always in the fringe, sigh.
Seriously, Mac OS has little in the way of learning curve. The context sensitive menu bar is the hardest part (and a legacy of the classic System's mono-tasking origins that shouldn't have been kept). Logic isn't all that hard to learn either. And I'm not even a 12-year-old. If you've used a linear MIDI/audio DAW package before, it's just a matter of funding equivalent features in Logic and getting used to the legacy GUI behaviors (some were eliminated in Logic X, so I hear; I'm still on 9 and the button menus still are a very non-Mac thing).

Better yet: Hackintosh or VMware. If that's too complicated for some peeps, they should probably find another, erm... cough-cough... hobby.mhog wrote:The best thing for me is: macbook pro and/or imac and OSX/WIN dual boot. It's not a matter of complexity for me. I just don't want anything to do with overpriced, under powered Mac hardware or it's under supported OS.........
There's nothing on Mac I want except Alchemy and I already own it.....fully functioning for the foreseeable future since Windows doesn't break compatibility with every .001 update.........OSX 10.5.1.6.4.9.5

Yeah well, even a Mac won't do you no good when you're not switching to Logic.
Many Mac users who use other hosts are left just as much in the cold as windows users.
