I'd like to see Urs do it, and he can hire Harry to do the spectral resynthesis part!fmr wrote:I don't think Urs is on the spectral synthesis vein. Tera and Cube are more or less in abandonware status, but a fusion of some of the coded modules of the two could be a good foundation for an Alchemy alternative (although Virsyn GUIs need to be worked by a designer, IMO).
And I also agree that Harmor presents a good alternative.
Why does no one do an Alchemy alternative?

Be inc. made some mistakes, mostly by jumping on the Internet appliance fad without doing the work of a native interface and abandoning BeOS in the process (which killed various commitments third party developers made to port big name products to BeOS, like Nuendo), but the bigger blame for the "flop" lies at Microsoft's feet, over the anticompetitive Windows licensing contracts they used to keep computer makers from bundling BeOS and Linux with computers.Frantz wrote:Sorry, didn't know much about BeOS. An alternative Alchemy would probably be called "Alterme" ?Tjgoa wrote:Why does no one make a company called Kamel and launch Alchimy with identical feature set-- maybe the guy who made babya logica?

My main tools: Kontakt, Omnisphere, Samplemodeling + Audio Modeling. Unify = godsend. Tari's libraries also rock.

Oh that's so easy. I'll get started on it right away. I have a small bit of experience with software design, and a bit of coding. I read articles (most of which is over my head) about DSP. I'll get a book or two and get going, i should have it done by winter
Seriously i have considered getting a used MacBook Pro and Logic to add to my PC setup as opposed to replacing it. Mainly, i would like to run Metasynth and when Alchemy gets a real update i would like to have it. But the cost of even a used Mac plus the time to learn a different OS is daunting. It would be nice to have two machines for my live performances regardless PC or Mac. Then i'd be more inclined to use things like Kaivo and Chromaphone live. Sorry getting a bit OT...

Well I guess you cold just make a "Hackintosh" from any Intel computer...
But really, Harmor is nowhere near an alternative. The engine sounds good, but it does not do morphing. In Alchemy, you could even link points in time with each other in the morphs, not just a straight A->B morph.

Kyma is something that I don't even think about usually, waaaaay above my budget, but when people start talking about spending $$$ at MacBook Pro + Logic level, they should start considering Kyma as well.

personally i was talking used macbook pro but if we're talking new macbook then you are right, it's just a few hundred more to (basic) kyma system...but then you still need a machine so really not that close. my budget for a used MBP might be about $700 or so. significantly less than either of those options.

Cinema 4D was already running and several other big ones...
First time I used Blender actually was on BeOS.
Could have changed the landscape as we know it.
Superfast and slick.
Still remember dragging a video file on the OpenGL demo and seeing the video run realtime on the morphing 3D geometry - and that was way before anybody had hardware OpenGL cards...
There were even rumours of Apple buying BeOS as their next OS after OS9...
Cheers,
Tom

This is what I thought happened but who knows? Disappeared awfully fast.ThomasHelzle wrote: There were even rumours of Apple buying BeOS as their next OS after OS9...
Still have a box version on my shelf, wanted to support BeOS so I bought it the first day it was online for sale. Had Sync modular running with quite low latency with the stock soundcard.
Shame it was lost
