For some, anytime anyone just tries to put these things to rest they just keep popping back up.

I think truism 1 is in direct opposition to truism 2 and 5
And Truism 3 and 4 oppose each other as well.
So how can truisms be truisms if they oppose each other, and if they are not then truisms, how can they be nonsense?

5 music production truisms that are actually nonsense:
1. Trust your ears!
2. Creativity and originality are the most important aspects of making music!
3. Your DAW's audio engine sucks!
4. You should be able to make your tracks sound amazing with minimal gear!
5. If you don't know music theory or production inside out, you shouldn't even be making music!

"A truism is a claim that is so obvious or self-evident as to be hardly worth mentioning, except as a reminder or as a rhetorical or literary device, and is the opposite of falsism. In philosophy, a sentence which asserts incomplete truth conditions for a proposition may be regarded as a truism."2ZrgE wrote:Check the meaning of the term 'truism' first before diving into logical disucssions. Might help understand the article.
So in a sense it is like 2 + 2 = 4

Someone in that thread wondered if the guy was just taking the piss. After all it winds up saying no worries, just use loops. After going into how Mozart is just like you, because of the article which debunks the whole 'divine inspiration' mythos. Because he had to actually do a lot of work. I think this guy has not the first clue what Mozart was up to. Or quite how to convey what he had received from people that did know what they're talking about.

it begins, 1), with an unnecessary dichotomy. He's fond of propping up notional stuff in order to knock it down. Is there someone that really argues that you're a "cretin" for using an analyzer instead of only ever using your ears? (But wait, are there people that rely on their eyes and numbers in preference to listening?)
Yeah, but obvious stupid is obvious.

I think "thought-terminating cliche" might be the word the author was looking for over truism. But that's less click-baity in nature, I suppose.
Hey! Check out my first plug-in (Haa5) at http://www.apexaudio.org Sounds great, and it's just $10 (or free, or whatever price you want to pay)!

More truist than you may think.V0RT3X wrote:MusicRadar writing an article on music truisms is kind of a farce though isn't
There is an article in this month's Computer Music by their Feature Editor Joe Rossiter that says the exact opposite of the Tim Cant* article, eg:
"Wouldn't it be liberating to be able to regress to the mental state you were in when you first picked up the hobby?"
"Suddenly, you're overthinking every move you make..."
"us producers can hugely overcomplicate matters"
"Block out the technical stuff and just do what sounds good"
"Use your ears"
The moral: Shun Clickbait
* Definition of Cant: Hypocritical and sanctimonious talk, typically of a moral, religious, or political nature
