I've got gigs of samples littered all over my hard drives and I'm drowning in them. It's getting to the point where my organizational handicap can't take it anymore. Can anyone recommend a relatively inexpensive sample librarian? Something that can scan drives and audition along with converting???

thanks,

Jason :(

And which sample format?

Hmmm.. interesting. Y'know, I've never really considered a sample management utility... Probably be a good idea :D

There's really good sample managenment tools available in both PC & Apple formats built in. Kinda hard to find, but do a search for em:

PC = Explorer

Mac = Finder

I'm afraid to organize my samples because I don't want to break references to any of them I might have used in previous work :)

So I probably have something like 57 versions of TR-707 kick drums in various folders. I'm not sure, though, this doesn't suit my "try this and see what happens" working style better than actually grouping them together :)

there's a pretty cool app for OSX called AudioFinder that does what I'm looking for but I can't seem to find anything like this for the pc. Honestly conversion isn't a big deal I'd just like to be able to audition multiple formats (wav, aif, mp3) and organize them, like an audio sample database. I can't believe no one's thought if this before....

Now that I'm out of Dick-Head mode, check out an app called "AudioSpace"

What you do is drag an alias of your sound folders into it & whatever is inside this things' file system will give you live auditioning through ANY open dialogue window..vst, host, windows, you name it. And it plays almost all formats as well.

Sorry, no link, but a search will take you there.

Look for: SoundFaction

And it plays almost all formats as well.
Do you mean single sample formats? It didn't seem to recognise soundfonts.

yup - Audiospace is good.
As sickle says - it works particularly well because it integrates itself into the OS dialog boxes - so it's available anywhere.

@steveholt - soundfonts aren't really samples. well they're not *just* samples. Think of them more like kontakt/halion/exs patches, but universal :)
