Treating Sequencers as a mini-DAW

Hi everyone,

I'm new to sequencers, so my question is one to seek context, to get an understanding of how most of them operate in one specific area of interest.

With hardware (or software, perhaps notably Maschine) instruments that contain a sequencer, typically, is it possible to create a series of empty patterns, so when you hit Record, you can treat it as if it were a mini-DAW?—endless space to record without a step-based limit before it loops?

For example, on an Elektron sequencer, you can create an empty 64 step pattern, chain as many empty 64 step patterns in a series as you wish, then record your playing, as if it were a DAW timeline or tape recorder.

I know that a couple of the DSI and perhaps all of the Modal Electronics have quite powerful sequencers, but from what I've seen in videos, they do not seem to have this ability.

Thank you for any insight.
