I just had a listen to some of the Vinylistic 1 sample CD round a mates house (we sometimes share a sample or tow, tut tut). The first break on the CD is f**king that Skullsnaps break, you know the one off the Matrix tune. WTF? How is it even conceivable that this is has sampled this and is now selling it? Surely they must have bought out the rights to this sample, and the countless others? If not, then how is someone NOT doing 10 - 15?

I dont know much about that sample CD but is it possable that they used the same CD for the music and not the other way arround?

The sample CD of the music? I believe the track is fairly old (60's issue), it sounds it anyway. Vinylistics came out mid-late 90's i believe. The break in question is a classic, and used most recently in that track from the Matrix (forgot the name, its has that classical piano bit, and the big string bassline).

Aren't such "samples" supposedly painstaking recreations rather than actual samples?

Thats the one mate, yeh. Well, all i can say is that if this is a recreation, hats off to those guys cuz they have f**king NAILED it. To be fair though, i dont believe that for a second. No one could recreate a loop that closely. I have both samples in front of me and they are identicle. I'd love to know the story behind this one!

I thought that the whole point of that was that they dug through the crates so you dont have to- are you sure they didnt just get a bunch of licenses?

I saw a similar thing once, Graeme Revell who's a decent composer made the music for Life on Mars. Or whatever the movie was called. The crappy one, I'm sure you remember

- Anyway, in the intro of the movie i heard a beat i recognized soooo much. I realized later that very recently i had been listening through sample cd's in a music store and it was the exact same one. No editing, effects or nothing. Straight from the CD. Can't remember which sample cd it was. It's sort of industrial so maybe one of the Jungle Warfare cd's. Ah well, it's always fun to spot samples

Vinylistics 1 is actually more like early 90's. And that break is also used in at least one prodigy track.

That's the whole point of sample CDs. You get breaks and don't have to go digging yourself. The stars are most likely just as lazy as the next guy.

Listen to things like jungle warfare (preferably slowed down) and that vinylistics 1,2 or 3 again. Those classics breaks are used everywhere. quite simple really.

Let's not even start talking about hip hop.

What's even cooler is when you spot instruments or more obscure samples from older stuff in new songs.

Mate, Im not that sure about anything, not even my own name!

However, they must have paid some f**king serious money to buy out the rights to all those classic breaks. I mean, last i heard most song writers wouldnt do top lines for these disco sampling house tracks, due to the fact that they dont make a bean on it. An that is just to clear the sample for use in a track, not completely buy out the copyright. Maybe you're right, I really dont know.

See your point totally mate, its just that i was always under the impression that the material had to belong to you. By this i dont mean licensed, i mean owned. How can you possible issue licenses to use samples if you are a licensee yourself?

Anyways, Im sure the CD is all above board and legit. But im still interested to here how the hell some guy was allowed to sample all his old vinyl and make a mint licensing it to people. Do you think he'd mind if i repacked his CD's as my own and sold them for 60 quid a pop?

Its funny, but I've seen alot of sample cds which contain the classic breaks (funky drummer etc). It seems that everybody just turns a blind eye to drum loop sampling. It does seem odd....

Dont it (seem odd i mean)! Either this stuff is now consider free for all, or some kind of deal has taken place to allow this stuff to be redistributed. Maybe the owners started dishing out special licenses which permit holders to sample and redistribute these breaks. Im seriously thinking of finding out though, cuz i have thousands of cool derivative breaks which I'd love to crack on a CD and sell. Never thought it was possible cuz they have (at source) some copyright material on.

I Just Dont Get It???
