In order of "discovery"
Tangerine Dream
Frank Zappa
King Crimson
Joni Mitchell
Stravinsky
Probably a couple of others too, but rules is rules.
Funny thing is, I only really recognise elements of 1.02 of these in any of my own stuff, so these acts (is Stravinsky an act?) spoke more to my wallet than to my composition.
Funny old world.

As a kid through to early 20s, wanting to play and perform...
Tangerine Dream
Hawkwind
Zappa
The Cure
Simon and Garfunkel
As an adult that no longer performs live, tours, party's and works mostly alone...
Hawkwind
Tangerine Dream
William Orbit
Shpongle
Lords of Acid
As said already this is a tough question. I was raised on so much music, with rediculous variety. I feel grateful for having an utterly open and accepting mind for sound and possibility.

GREAT topic and also great to see the Orb listed (twice already)!
(1) Information Society - Heard it in high school and knew that's what I wanted to do
(2) Bach - He compelled me to learn how to sight-read
(3) Wendy Carlos - She taught me how to listen to Bach in a completely different way
(4) The Orb - Just don't know what to say exactly; serious respect
(5) Depeche Mode - Taught me analog and digital can live side-by-side and a million other things (drum processing, producing, songwriting, etc.)
Cannot leave out:
(6) Kraftwerk - Taught me to show care in rhythm, melody, and sound design
Take all of the above and here's what turned up:

When I was a senior in high school, we had a "Grad Night" event at Walt Disney World. There were several bands playing, and one was InSoc. I wound up coming back for every set they did.k-tronix wrote:(1) Information Society - Heard it in high school and knew that's what I wanted to do
The band sort of does, but mostly doesn't, hold up now -- but I was pretty impressed with them at the time.

Their first album is fantastic. Music has become a somewhat disposable commodity these days, but I bought a physical copy so that I could listen repeatedly to the album as a whole for days at a time. I love the way the compressor is used in such an instrumental way. Some hate that effect, but it just works so well here.klavierr wrote:2. Purity Ring
Definitely like your other influences as well and am already checking out 1 and 5.
