There was a tutorial on this on some webpage I'm not able to find anymore, maybe it was intermusic.com. Anyways, it showed how to program piano, guitar, etc. using general guidelines to be applicable to any synth. Has anyone got a link to something like this :help:

You mean something like this.

You can find a bunch of archived stuff if you go to archive.org and type in intermusic.com into the Wayback Machine search field.

you got me- that is it. my advice for programming realistic patches is to watch/study the theory behind what you want to emulate. once you see how the instrument works you can emulate it better.

A good place to start might be Hyperphysic's music instrument page. Has lots of good intro information on acoustics.

That sort of page drives me up the wall. Looks impressive, tells nothing.

For instance, it explains that clarinets overblow in the 3rd harmonic, whereas other instruments overblow in the 2nd because they have a conical bore. It doesn't say that clarinets have cylindrical bore, but I think that's the case.

Then if you look up the explanation of overblowing it shows a cilindrical bore, overblowing in the 2nd harmonic, which directly contradicts their other statement, and no explanation of the difference between cylindrical and conical bore at all.

Raaaahhhh!!!!

Woohoo! Saved those intermusic tutorials until I got a headache. Still nothing really useful for synth programming though. I guess I'll just have to find a simple synth with realistic patches and take it apart. Anyone know of a synth like this, most I've got have only synth sound patches (I'll double check when I get home).
