Ableton Live 4: any buyers?

Anyone here who bought Ableton Live 4 up to now and made some real tests? Is it worth?

Definately worth it... But don't expect to do things the way you do them in Cubase or Logic... it requires a little imagination and maybe rethinking traditional methods...

I have read much about Live 4 and I have seen, that it is a little bit different. I need a congenial partner for my FL-Studio. And it looks like Live 4 is the right one...

I bought it but haven't had the time to write a complete tune with it yet. It's definitely different than Sonar. For me, the workflow is much smoother. Everything is right in front of you, no need for multiple windows. I can see myself migrating over to Live completely. Try the demo for yourself and decide if it's for you.

Bought it. Love it.
The midi editing facilities are pretty crude, but they're adequate for my needs. It's so much more fun than any other sequencer I've tried that it's shortcomings don't bother me much.
I do wish they'd implement warp markers on midi clips though.

Bought it. Love it.
Just to re-iterate, its nothing like a traditional sequencer like Cubase or Logic. It does the same stuff, but its more intuitive.

Got it, Sonar and Live are now my 1-2 combo, between the two they got EVERYTHING I need.
Its an amazing app, you def need to do the tutorials and read the forums to understand HOW to use it. Its more than just a sequencer and more than an instrument yet.... not completely either
I plan on using it with my buddy to do dj/live performance sets.

Been beta testing for a month, bought it as soon as it was released.
This guy is amazing. Yes you may need to rethink your mental template to begin to get inside it, but this really means having to stop thinking the way other apps force you into their little rat-maze. It is VERY intuative once you get past the inital shock of...can it be that easy ? When the answer is, yes it can be that easy !
I have now pulled all other DAW apps off my computer. I do also use Numerology for its brand of sequencing and arps, and Peak as a deep waveform editor. Recording, composing, mixing and fun, fun jamming all in Live 4 now !

should be buying it tonight as long as my girlfreind doesnt get too inquisitive, ditiching Logic in favour of it. Love its work method and combined with energy xt it does everything want to do.
I was looking round last night and found v4 for £210 but I cant find it now, anyone know whos selling it that cheap?

If you own Delta Live, the "lite" version that comes with M-Audio and some other sound cards, it ought to be good for a discounted upgrade to the full version, possibly a better deal than retailers. If this applies to you, email the ableton support folks to ask about pricing, etc. They're helpful and friendly... though at the moment they're probably also terribly overworked; patience might be needed but they're good folks. :-)Jaybez wrote:I was looking round last night and found v4 for £210 but I cant find it now, anyone know whos selling it that cheap?

I've been using the beta and I'm waiting on delivery of the full product. I don't know what type of host you have used before but if it's Cubase/Sonar/Logic then Ableton 4 will be very different at first. It works like a spreadsheet where data (audio/midi) is input into a grid. Each column represents a track with full channel control and each row used to construct a verse, chorus, intro, breakdown etc. etc. There is an explorer type pane where audio/midi/effects/synths are dragged into the spreadsheet. It works without any audio gapping while a song is playing.
It's possible to play and record any combination of audio/midi in this spreadsheet view - creating jams which include automation that is then converted into conventional tracks in the track view. It's very easy to then fine tune position and automation through editing in the track view.
Having wrote all this I agree that trying the demo is the only way to tell whether it will suit your creative style.

Since its release last Saturday I've finished two 7 minutes tracks solely in Live4. I have and would have never finished a complete track in Live3, and it would have taken me a lot longer to arrange those tracks in Logic. Usually I work on a track for at least a week.
There are still some crashes with a number of VST plugins on MacOS9 and some memory allocation problems, so it doesn't feel as rock solid as Live3 did. Some cosmetics with the MIDI implementation are also necessery. But all in all the addition of MIDI and after all the funtastic routing possibilities make it the most efficient and the most fun instrument I've worked with since Reaktor came out!
I won't abandon Logic for it though. There's a lot that you can not do in Live, and I doubt this will ever change if it sticks to its philosophy of ease of use and realtime application - and it should stick to that philosophy.
Hence: It's the best second car ever!
