DAW for generative music

Hi,
I'm interested in making house styles of music that feature some element of generative music and or using sounds and their associated Fx's with predefined chances of being played, or not.
After doing a little research I'm leaning towards Numerology 4 as it looks like it has been designed to simplify the making and sequencing of generative, adaptive, random etc styles of music production. But, I do not own a Mac ( Lubuntu user http://lubuntu.net/) . I've also looked into pure data https://puredata.info/ and though pd has all the tools I need I think it's more useful for designing the elements that would go into a DAW rather than being used as a stable DAW in it's self. Essentially I'm looking for music production that has an approach where any part of the music can be made to change at some generative or chance level.
Any suggestions please.

Ableton has some really interesting randomizers, especially the max for live devices, but also their native ones, too.
Reason also has some interesting possibilities with its CV input capability, but you cannot use VSTs with it.

Yeah, Ableton Live has integration with Max (a relative of Puredata) and so can use many already made devices for generative music as well as making your own.

I do a lot of generative things and love Bitwig Studio for it. It runs on Linux so that would probably be a plus for you. It's modulation system is very intuitive and deep. I combine it witch several midi and generative VSTs (PIZMIDI etc.). I also use Reaktor for these kind of thngs.
Version 2 of Bitwig will have a modular environment for building your own devices, but I don't know when it will be released, could be a while, version 1.3 just came out.
Loomer is supposed to release a modular midi environment and they usually have Linux versions, but it's supposed to come out for years, so it's hard to say when it actually will.

Renoise runs on Linux but I'm not familiar with it - it's more of a tracker kind of approach...
Cheers,
Tom

Renoise has some good randomizers and pattern shifters. It also lets you draw your own waveforms and manipulate them. It is a great program, and makes you think about patterns differently from other DAWs, which I find helpful for spurring creativity.ThomasHelzle wrote: Renoise runs on Linux but I'm not familiar with it - it's more of a tracker kind of approach...

Noatikl 2 comes in plugin form, which might be of interest to you. Not quite a DAW, but at least it can play inside the DAW of your choice.

It's actually pretty decent, i own a copy of it myself.
Might be worth checking out?

Thanks. Producing music should be fun when combining the common approach of manual electronic music composition with some automatically generated sounds. Plus it should give more scope for new idea's to evolve.

Maybe not hundret prozent in topic but I just see lots of "generative experts" around here
so I just ask:
- anything similiar to cgmusic (http://codeminion.com/blogs/maciek/2008 ... ate-music/) ? Such a shame the develloper just dont find time for further devellopment
- all the tools you mentioned are great but in most terms (noatikl, musicwonk) just too heavy for me to learn/use
- so just looking for something easy and fun to use (only I found so far: cgmusic) AND with musically good/interesting results
- only things I miss in cgmusic is direct chord/progression entering (only scale per part) so that I can use it in combination with other tools like sundog etc.
I have looked a lot in these space over the years but sometimes something just slipped threw, so an ideas welcome, freeware of course prefared
EDIT: Windows 7
, on a mac I think I would not have to search cause of numerology (as far as I heard about it)

Unfortunately its also Mac, but look at Xx by U&I Software (makers of metasynth) or at least the demo video. It is a standalone generative/algorithmic sequencer that hosts instruments and outputs midi and audio. I have it and like it:
http://uisoftware.com/XX/
If that doesnt float your boat, try these cheap generative music apps by Brian Eno; they do what OP wants but are not DAWs:

It seems quite feature rich. I especially appreciate that it also comes as a plug-in, so can be used to trigger ,using midi, another instrument Plugin within a DAW.V0RT3X wrote:Noatikl 2 comes in plugin form, which might be of interest to you. Some standalones can send and receive triggers to/from instrument plugins within a DAW.
Or at least chordwarepa can, given a clock sync and midi in/out.
From there I think its an appropriate addition to the list.
Edit:
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Edit:
I'm currently working on an option for triggering the player and arps from midi input notes such as drum patterns rather than the normal clock. The only thing left is preventing feedback loops.
Edit:
Done and uploaded. The feedback protection is program-wide now. Hope you will check it out
