What do you call your gear? (This is simple and slightly pointless challenge, see inside)

KVR needs a like option so that I don't have to reply to a post just to indicate that I thought that it was seriously funny.keyman_sam wrote:That's because its rude not to invite them. It's just when I say " I'm gonna play with my junk now" people look at me funnily. Weird!
If anyone wants to come over and play with my junk, just PM me, it's kind of old though, so you'd have to be into playing with old junk that smells a little funny. Sorry, it's not like I have complete control over where my junk has been, it's picked up a few odors along the way. Still, you might find it surprising how inspirational old junk can be. Sure, it's not the instant satisfaction that you get from new junk; you have to coax it a bit to get a response; but trust me on this; it's worth the effort.

I pretty much just refer to everything as "My Gear."
For the Parker Fly I call it "The Parker."
For the Suhr I call it "The Suhr."
When I get that Kiesel 8 string I'm sure I'll just call it the "Vader8" because I don't like trying to confuse myself with anthropomorphising nonliving tools.
For the synth and noise mangling stuff I just call that the "Total Perspective Vortex" to borrow from one of my dead heroes. That's right CERN. You got nothing on what we noisemakers can do to reality

To the original post: I'm verbose and literal, so I rarely use one word to encompass all my music equipment. Stuff and tools. As close as it gets.

It doesn't occur to me to call 'it' anything. I lock the door if I'm going to be gone for more than a couple minutes and I suppose that's about 'so no one is going to steal my shit'.

I have a hard time saying that seriously, since I have no acoustic treatment. So I'll usually add quotation marks.Rah wrote:My studio
Sounds like I do something serious with it

Same here. My "studio" is a noisy spare bedroom, with the AC unit right outside the window and the furnace directly below in the basement, with my wife's desk and a large aquarium in it. The only thing that makes it a "studio" is a Maschine, Komplete Audio 6 and Edirol MA-10As hooked up to it and a small accumulation of random instruments and guitar pedals. Any acoustic recording, I do with my Zoom H4 in the other spare bedroom where there's space and relative quiet.Jace-BeOS wrote:I have a hard time saying that seriously, since I have no acoustic treatment. "Gear" or "stuff" is about it, really.

I want a single word replacement for pieces of gear that is as meaningful as possible.

"My gear" usually covers it quite nicely.
When I disappear from the family for long stretches, I let them know that I'm "in the studio."
On the rare occasions that my wife refers to it, the studio gets called "his mistress," or "his other wife."
My kids, who normally won't give me credit for anything, always bring visiting friends down to show the studio off, and for a fleeting few moments, I'm the coolest dad around.
Cheers
