One Synth Challenge #80: MUX by MuTools (Voting Over, preliminary results in)

Oh man, I remember my first days (years?) with MUX, but back then it was but a fraction of what it is today. Back then I felt quickly that it had potential. Now it has power!
But to gain control over it and a sense of comfort did take time. Nowadays I can playfully make almost any sound I wish from scratch, which I prefer, but it's easy to get lost in the adventure. Occasionally I almost forget that it's a challenge to get certain sounds and it puzzles me, when I don't get it immediately, haha...it's weird. But then, I'm familiar with the limits, too. I can only imagine how difficult it is to work with all kinds of uncertainties, not knowing how far it could go.

Anyway, you've done a mighty fine job with your sound design, Dee!

Most of you do other work than OSC (may be related to music and sound)... But take part in OSCs with winner tracks.

But..Guyz... How you all do this? It's really mystery for me. Is it only experience or it is natural talent to create nice music?

I am trying to get out of "bunch of good sounds mixed" to a proper "music"...!

And my sleep...??!! It will be restless day, I think..!! It's Sunday afternoon here...and I am at my home town... In couple of hours l have to leave for 6 hour journey to my workplace. I can get sleep at night only..now.

Mahaha, thank you so much, Dee! I still believe that the word "talent" is mostly misunderstood. Talent, in my eyes, is a combination out of a certain inclination to express your experiences and the will to pursue greater clarity to do so. I've done that on the computer off and on (more on than off) for the better part of 30 years, thus...experience plays maybe the biggest role?!
With what I hear from you, you've got all the talent it takes! Your passion is easy to sense and your understanding is growing exponentially!

Oh, too loud, yah...you have massive weight on the lower mids and that flute like sound in the beginning boosts straight through my brains. I guess, using Voxengo's Span might give you a bit of a visual on how powerful your frequencies are saturated. I wonder, if you were to pick a professionally mixed song that has similar qualities to what you want to achieve, it might be interesting to run this one through SPAN or some spectral viewer and compare it with yours, you know!?

OK..noted your point about the track. I Need to give more attention in future OSCs so that such problem does not happen.

Unfortunately, I will not able to correct this in this track, due to limited license. I have not bounced any track this month.

About creating the tracks... Taron pretty much nailed it I think, it's pretty much mostly experience and refining as you go along. I haven't heard your track yet, but I'll be sure to give some more suggestions if I have any. About eq, I think it is a very important skill -- if you don't feel confident with it that'd be the first thing I'd try to tackle. Just build up your experience with it and try to use it as often as you can to build up those experience points. Use it on every track at first, then after awhile you'll see that only a small amount is need on a few tracks The visualiser's are good but ears are most important. For the kick and bass though, I'm still mostly always bringing out the visualizers though. Cheers

OMG ...that's bizarre. You've just reminded me that I hardly used any EQ on my track this time?! ...pfff, that's weird. I guess, there are a few things I just do automatically by now, not to mention that I hooked EQ into my TeaVerb, making sure it won't muddy up the mix. And, because it was all Mux, I probably just intuitively used filters to get the right sound I was after. But, yeah, on all the other OSC tracks of mine I started to use EQ on virtually every instance of the respective instrument. Most of the time to get the 400Hz region under control and often some adjustment tuned to the main harmonic peak of each specific track and the song's tonic.

On this song, though, I did the really naughty thing to just hook up the Nova-67P on the master at the very end...left it at the default "mastering example", hahaha... but then it was like 3am or so...

As for Dee's journey... ...you scared me there for a moment! Well, that's a sweet reason to take on such a trip.

With EQ, like compression, a little can go a long way.

Ever since my dear friend Gregor opened my eyes to limiters, I'm totally hooked on those! I have to wake back up to compression, too. I keep favoring the brute force of limiters. However, on my song I did a sum compression against the main melody and dark hits (at the end) on a side chain. It really makes a world of a difference! That's a very easy way to make sure your lead instrument stands out and immense hits won't have to be brutally loud to feel brutally loud.

In MuLab it's kind of nice, because you can just switch to Modular view of your song and arrange each rack which ever way you like. In this case, because I only did the side chain at the very end, I just made an "additional" master rack, hooked the melody and the hit on it, put the original master through the side chain compression and into that additional master. I migrated the limiter and Nova from the original to the new master and voila... took all but 20 seconds to build.

This is my entry...!! I feel this is the best entry of mine, so far.

I'll update other details after some time.

Brief introduction of my track and thought process behind its creation:

The flavor of this music piece is totally different than my past two entries.

Basically, it has tribal-ish rhythm and drum/percussion sounds (African)... and top of it, Indian style of melody with calm and chill sounds with Indian / Bollywood feel.

After down tempo tribal-ish/african drum grooves, Dreamy Pan flute-ish sound with vibrant keys are main sounds. Fat bassy pads makes track's frequency spectrum wide spread.

The track is called "Gandy Meets Mandy".

Originally It was thought to name it... "Gandhi Meets Mandela" to showcase the tracks feeling.

What does it happen when two peace icons of our world, among many others meet in 21st century...?

But later on decided to tweak it little bit... to avoid hurting any culture or community (directly..!) due to my "not-so-great-as-they-were" track.

This is my dedication to world... All human beings and all children of mother nature...

Deep peace is intended with is the musical piece. Hope my vision and feeling is reaching to world through this attempt.

Dee, I think you shouldn't have to worry about the "quality" of your track compared to the message you had in mind for it. When you want to say something as best as you can right now, the best you should have to hope for is that it is understood and not judged. The only thing to worry about, of course, is the possible sense that you might take advantage of big names for a selfish agenda, even if that has nothing to do with what you were after. It's just a risk that always comes with the use of known names. If I were you, I'd probably rather go for the names of the clothings, or the food, or landmarks, or- dare I suggest- instruments. These things are least dangerous in case you had any worries.

When you make music the way you do it from the place it comes from within you, it's automatically your dedication to the universe!

Actually, the thought came earlier days of month. And this name struck my mind. It lead me throughout this month. I felt so connected with the song that could not think of alternatives. I tweaked it after I complteted it...while I was uploading.

Taron, This is really good suggestion for my future works as I am planning to try similar with different cultural music. So many things to consider for future.
