Well, it's basically same device with high quality color display and few more functions. There is no suprise it's more expensive.

I can't tell if I'll be getting Push replacement, but certainly it's tempting

Now, coming back to the DAW... it's free upgrade and it's massive. Only useful features.

I bought my Push 1 secondhand... so seems quite generous to me

it also seems to support a good cause, schools... which is interesting, I think this means we will see it supported for a long time. (no point in dumping on school kids and then stopping support!)

but Id hang on... having downloaded and started digging into Live9.5 application bundle, it looks like the Push2 will need a 'display process' to run (Push2Display.app) , i.e. its not communicating via pure midi anymore... which means the Push1 may still be much more attractive if you are using third party applications, or using it as a generic midi controller.
(im suspecting push2 buttons/pads will be pure midi, but no ability to drive the LCD dislay as you could before)

... perhaps if this is the case, the Push 1 will turn into a hackable midi device.

perhaps, or perhaps not... the Push2DisplayProcess appears to be a standalone app, and processes QML, so I think its possible it could be hacked/'updated'. actually looks quite interesting.
BUT, my fear is it might be an issue for platforms other than Windows/Mac, without reverse engineering the USB protocol, and thats a time consuming process.
Unless Ableton makes it open source... but they have been pretty lax on documenting even the Push1 midi api.

Got a reply from Andy at Cytomic Live now has the new MD filters developed for The Drop for some of live's filters, Wow I use The Drop a lot you guys are spoiled.

Yeah, what's especially cool is that The Drop's filters are now incorporated in a synth (Operator). Cool stuff.

Although having the filters in Operator is good, it's not quite a classic subtractive workflow since there is no post filter amp, which isn't ideal when the filter is self oscillating! I've pointed this out to the Ableton guys and they are working on the best way to fix it.

I only played with it briefly so I haven't run into this yet, but what you're saying makes sense.
Wouldn't be too hard to add an amp+env at the end of the chain me thinks. Then again, I'm not a developer nor a product manager, so everything seems doable to me

Again, the "Andy" factor elevates Live. And 9.5 is a free update!?! This is why Live is still a great value, and I never mind the paid upgrades.

Lacking any diversity, Auto-filter was weak compared to any modern counterparts even for simple sweeps, so the addition of Cytomic filters is really welcome, as I'm sure it will be for the Simpler/Sampler. The improvements to Operator (even without the post-filter amp) should be peachy - haven't tried it yet, but it's already a great little synth (and killer drum synth thanks to the independent phase settings per oscillator) - my one humble killer-feature request would have to be a filter bypass for selected carrier oscillators.

As far as Push 2; I've never been a fan of dedicated devices (or I'd have bought NI Machine long ago), but I'm definitely in a long-term relationship with Live, maybe it's time to move in.

You won't regret it. Seriously it makes a world of a difference, if Live is your main host.

I am sure Andy's filter code is top notch, but why does the auto-filter display cramping towards nyquist for all filter models? Also, I don't see the resonance limiting represented in the display either?

From the rollover tips It suggests that at least one of the models has resonance limiting (I assume in a similar fashion to the Sonalksis TBK and Vengeance filters, to stop excess resonance in the low end?)

Is this just a display thing? I would expect the display to represent the filter response accurately, otherwise what's the point in having it?

The new waveform display for audio clips is great when fully zoomed in, but actually kind of blurry at more zoomed out levels and looked better before the update. Graphically anti-aliasing single lines is often a cure worse than the disease at resolving detail imo.

And, yeah browser definitely still sucks hard. I really wish I could delete some of Ableton's default shortcuts that I never use and have icons on the folders or colour coding for my own so I can keep the browser more minimised to save screen space. Bloody annoying!!

The fact that Ableton have icons for their top shortcuts means they can see the value of such a system (especially when the browser division is collapsed to the left). Not to allow the user to define their own for the shortcuts in the lower pane is ridiculous and very slack programming. Sort it out FFS! No excuse for omitting basic things like this!
