Yes it is, but you are also correct in that there are elements of Hydra in there :)

Im just logging in & out real fast to say one thing

I found a synth that sounds nearly the same as the TS 404, and theres only one im sure, because i tried so many

its the tone2 firebird, which is now released for free on tone2 website. the firebird out of a hundred synths i tried is the only thing i heard close to a 404's detunes saws, a 404's distortion section with its filter drive. the firebird can make sounds just like that random pattern (now expired) you heard in first post. Seriously, only the Tone2 firebird sounds anything at all like the TS 404

Post

Wow!
What a topic!
It's good to see others liked these old stuff!
At that time, I liked both the hammerhead drum machine, and the ts-404 program.
It's interesting how many thingz changed as the years passed,
now everything is in plugins. IMHO several plugins have that kind of sound ts-404 owns.
On the other hand, the new plugins has much more capabilities.

Post

they really dont, only the tone2 firebird has a filter and distortion like the TS 404 does, ive used dozens of VSTs, firebird does it.

sorry my link expired but ill upload a comparison using just one sound as an example when i can to show you what i mean

Post

I really liked this example you have in the beginning of the topic. I think it has certain character, beautiful digital character.

So I'm going to check out firebird.

I love music, worked with a number of music/rhythm/dance games like Pump It Up, In The Groove, Cytus and Deemo, and teach music production.

Agree with the OP: the original TS-404 was fantastic. It's one of my favourite soft synths still today, too bad can't be used as a VSTi.

Hammerhead and TS-404... a serious pre-VST-world combo.

In the right hands, they could bang an acid night, back in the day.

Don't forget Stomper (Hyperion) ;)
CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, Moved to Reason and Rack Extensions exclusively (from Reaper and VSTs) several years ago.

Hah, I remember early on in using FL the ts404 doing like 90% of my basslines. Sure I was making half ass attempts at abstract hiphop beats at the time but I thought all the sliding & squelching sounded cool.

Time doesnt negate

I too loved and still do TS404

That and Granulab turned me onto digital music being unemployed and bored

I used to bloody love that synth. I'd press play on Hammerhead, a demo of FruityLoops V1 and the TS-404, then hit record on my soundcard, back when you could record the wave output of consumer soundcards. Record it, then it's gone. Created a few songs that way, like this one:

Here's an old track of mine I made with fruityloops 2 and I'm pretty sure I used ts404..

I always thought the 404 in Fruityloops was nothing like the standalone .exe. So tame sounding in comparison. the .exe was just dirty. I loved it.
