TOTO!! Damn! That would be my ultimate gig! That band in their prime was just phenomenal! I will take that as a compliment.
Of course, it was a compliment :D
Guitarjeff wrote: Actually my main gig is fairly close to Toto musically, though not nearly as sophisticated.
Modesty is for sissies and poncy little tits with names like 'Joolz' (so are politically provocative and devisive sigs). Most of the time it won't even buy you a cup of bad coffee.

Toto is quite possibly/probably the best studio band in the world :) and awesome live too :)

:D They are coming here in September! 8)

I entered their Album Review contest for some fun (they'll prolly send a hitman after me) but I wouldn't have bothered if I didn't like them a lot.

Toto Home Page

You can also get some of Jeff Porcaro's drum patterns there! :)

David Paich is either the penultimate perfectionist or the supreme analist - or both - but you have to love what he does...

...and I still find it hard to grasp that Ninetynine was originally recorded almost thirty years ago! f**k...
:-o

...and Bobby Kimball makes an interesting comment here (which is worth thinking about)

Question: Do crowd reactions to your shows vary depending on what country / nationality you're playing for?

Bobby: No question about it. We have a very strong crowd reaction in France, Germany, Holland, all of Scandinavia, Italy, Japan, South America, but not so strong a fan-base in America itself. I think the basics for success in America is the "youth-oriented" new-wave music. It gets used in advertisements and really gets a push from the bigger labels (we own our own label, so costs are at a premium for advertisement).

So, was he talking about how Clear Channel Radio controls most of what get's delivered these days to American ears?? :hihi:

About the compliment thing...

Wasn't sure if you were a Toto fan. I've seen Toto absolutely slammed on this forum before. :x

It seemed from your other comment you might have been somewhat against the perfectionist aspect of their music. My bad!!

I've spent some time at the Toto site as well! Which album did you review? Man, it's hard to pick a fav record by them. I might have to go with 7th one. 'Pamela" if probably my favorite song. Really love the debut, Hydra, and Farrenheit also. Can't forget the Fergie record too. What pipes!! :singer:

Awesome band. Studio and live, you are correct. I had the honor of witnessing their first live show ever (or so they said) in 1977 opening for Peter Frampton in Honolulu when I was just a wee axe slinger of 12 or so. It was totally awesome. It made me want to go home and learn every song on the record!! I've also got an awesome bootleg DVD from the Hydra tour. (saw 'em on that one too!)

I consider Jeff Porcaro to be the ultimate drummer. I would love to have played with the man! What a huge loss for music :( his death and Phillip Lynott's both hit me really hard as a music fan.

Enjoy them in Sept.! I'm seeing Chicago and Earth Wind And Fire in August for my big concert of the Summer. Should be very cool. 2 very musical bands as well.

When I was a kid, I used to wonder if "99" was written about Barbara Feldon (agent 99 from the "Get Smart" TV show!)

Nice to meet another Toto fan!! :)

Cheers!
