PCI would also be ok, but I prefer usb as my debian server is hard to open

I think theres supposed to be some drivers for those emagic things

only recommended cards though are RME I believe. Cant go wrong with a soundblaster and Jack though - cheap and cheerful

I use Edirol Audio and MIDI interfaces (UA-1X and UM-2) under SUSE 9.1.
They work out of the box with ALSA/usb-snd-audio. I can't speak for the newer USB/MIDI keyboards, such as the PCR series, but if the USB implementation is to spec (most likely with Edirol), they should work.
