a friend of mine that has a nice job here gave me zebra as a gift. The full price of Zebra (199 euros) is roughly R$ 800. My rent is 844. So, it's pretty expensive these days

In the 70's you had to mortage your car in order to be able to just get a simple monosynth.

These days, as long as you got a fair enough computer, anybody can get into the game just using freeware

^ not really fair to compare like that because as technology advances and it's more available, things should cost less and less...

It's seemingly harder to talk about software in that respect...

Unfortunately the same goes for the McDonalds index

Poor cows and pigs going into the grinder, to keep those burgers at ridicilously low prices

good thing I'm kinda vegetarian

... really helps save gas money for stove since vegetables take significantly less time to cook.

I drive a Prius C, and in the year I owned it, drove 10 thousand miles at an average of 42mpg. (Long-distance highway driving lowers the average quite a bit; I get more like 55mpg in town.) The current price of gas here is currently $1.65, so $50 could buy me 30 gallons, taking me 1260 miles, which would last me for 46 days.

Gas is $2.89/gallon in my neighborhood. I've seen it in the low to mid 2 dollar range in other parts of Seattle. I didn't know gas would be so much cheaper in the Midwest.

Rent = $300 a week, all expenses paid.
One meal = $5.00 or so out at a fast food joint.

$50 = a Valhalla plugin or a weeks worth of groceries.

Zebra/Dark Zebra = groceries for most of a month.

$200, even though I'm a well-paid computer programmer, is a lot of money for me. When I went to buy Forest Kingdom II, I literally ate ramen/not dogs/mac and cheese for a month to save up the money.

Fortunately, my spending on music gear has dropped a LOT in the past six months, so I actually have money in the bank and am looking forward to opening a savings account early next year!

I don't see how folks can afford to spend $500+ on sample libraries.. urgh..

Hmm, taking a look at some of my monthly expenses in the same range as common software purchases here in the Pacific Northwest USA...

Mobile phone plan: $99
Landscapers: $110
Electricity: $120
Cable/Internet: $177
Car payment: $180

Mortgage and groceries are wayyyy more.

I have a personal "impulse buy" limit of $100 USD. If it looks cool and it's under a hundred, I'll buy it. With anything more expensive than that, I'll only pick it up if I have a specific use for it in mind. (I buy the most plugins during the mixing phase of whatever given project I'm working on.)

About the same for me but I don't drive much. FWIW, it costs around $50-75 to fill up my tank, depending on the time of year because extra taxes are added for half the year.

A Macdonalds quarter pounder here would then cost $2 a burger

Around here, McDonald's sandwiches are averaging around $5-6.

But when the fortnight is up you have no more fuel.

But if you spent $100 on a synth plug, you would still be able to use that the next month and next year for that matter.

It really depends i would say. I don't think you mind paying what you have to pay, when you make or produce music for a living. All operating costs i guess. Not sure if i fully get the point of the thread though, so i don't know if my reply is valid.

In Southern California, gas averages around $4 this time of year and closer to $5 in the summer.

How expensive is Music Software relative to Living Expenses?
