Anyone else get bothered by screens for making music sometimes? I've always thought it affects concentration. Something to think about.

Sad thing is that in my daytime job I literally stare at a screen for 8 hours (whith half an hour break), and continue working on my music computer screen at home. So I began to get acquainted to my Push lately, just for a bit of change. And I don't even have a smartphone (which often covers the rest of the day for some other people concering 'screen staring')

What gets me is that I am wearing bifocals here. Depending on the angle of the screen I either need to have my head sticking way up to see it or other such things.

Yep, 100%

It's one of the main reasons I prefer working with hardware as much as possible.

Staring at screens doesn't bother me at all; 8 hours a day as a software developer, then go home and web surf, play games, make music, whatever. And increasingly I read books on a Kindle instead of on paper.

The tactile experience of knobs and finger pads, and occasionally drum heads or strings, and occasionally a game controller :D is pretty good to have though.

Sorry, but what a nonsense. The thought that universities even get money for such "scientific" researches really leaves me horrified about the world today. Edit: At least the headline is. There is a difference between being distracted and temporarily being rendered deaf. Nice they did a Research about something which is literally known since humans exist btw.

Yes I do. And, I don't think it's just the fact that it's a screen. Software gui's themselves and colours all seem to have effects that place placebo/pseudo influence on what one hears.

Something interesting that does support this is that I often have to look away from the screen or close my eyes to 'hear' things. I do it mostly subconsciously.

Ditto. After spending most of my day analyzing data, writing reports, emailing, etc. at a computer, I want to spend as little time as necessary staring at a screen when I'm making music. That's not to say that I don't still spend much of my music time staring at the screen, but incorporating hardware and real instruments breaks up the monotony of using the computer.

Sometimes I long for the original DX7 interface, on second thought, no I don't really :D

It's the people behind the screen staring at me that makes me paranoid. I can hear them whispering and sniggering all the time.
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

every day, take a moment to focus on something far away. even looking at the horizon when you're driving works. if you totally live inside boxes, close your eyes and visualise something you remember looking at from a distance.. a treetop or something. that can help your eyes if you have to spend most of the time focusing at a 3' distance.
you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.

As long as the sky is clear at night, I always look for the big dipper, a couple of light years away
