The viola gets a bad press (and is the butt of some merciless joking) but it has lots going for it, and has a lot more flexibility of tone than people realise. Thanks for posting Fly - it's one of my favourite Nick Drake songs. This has some nice viola of a different sort:

The “sul tasto“ articulation is not a weak bowing technique, it's a common articulation in many classical and modern works for string instruments where the composer asks for that sound in a score, it doesn't happen by accident (unless you're a beginner with the bow bowing all over the place). I just dialed it in for some of the notes in that little solo.foosnark wrote:
With bowed instruments, weak technique tends to sound quieter and less smooth, and there is more bow noise.

Interesting - I just looked this up and also listened again - so Sean was actually referring to more or less the exact opposite than what I meant.

I LOVE the noise component of bowed instruments. Seriously, if I ever find a way to impart that on any input sound, it's going into a plugin.

Noise variants are underrated as modulation sources.

My late grandfather was a maker for many years and demonstrated the differences in tone between violas in terms of both playing techniques and construction to me many times. It's a very versatile instrument in the right hands. The London Philharmonia have a very good demonstration of some of the variety of tones on Youtube and explains the instrument very well.valhallasound wrote:I'm not as versed in orchestral instruments as I should be, so this may be a stupid question: Does the viola have the reputation of being more of a noise-based signal than the violin? The example you posted sounds almost flute-like at times.
The cello one is wonderful and brings back many memories as 'cellos were my grandfather's speciality as a performer and luthier.

The guy in the Viola video kind of looks like Michael Bolton from Office Space.

Loving this verb, I am using it all over and it is adding an 'expensive sounding sheen' if that makes sense. Really good

Hey folks,
The ValhalalPlate 1.5.0 beta for OSX is available in your valhalladsp.com user accounts. Assuming, y'know, that you bought the plugin.
New stuff:
- Fixed stereo panning bugs in a few modes. I can't remember which ones had the errors, but they are fixed now.
- Five (5) new reverb modes.
3 of the new reverb modes (Adamantium, Titanium, Osmium) have been dialed in to emulate different plate models. Lower modal density at the minimum size, extended high frequency response, and lows ranging from tight to massive.
The Radium mode is designed to preserve the stereo image and panning of any signals put into it. I describe it as "parallel stereo," but parallel mono is the best way of describing it. Imagine 2 plates, that have all the random variations of real plates, but tightly matched for decay times and tonal response. Pan a signal anywhere in the stereo image, and Radium will reverb it from that part of the stereo image only. It is still nice and wide for mono signals.
Lithium is another "big" mode, with chamber-esque modal density. Soft attack, a nicely tamed high frequency response, and stereo imaging that starts from the source location and slowly fills the stereo field.
I need to make 1 or 2 changes to the next OSX beta, and will then port things over to Windows. The Windows port will happen post-Christmas, once the bugs are worked out of the main code base.

You're a beast dude. Make sure to take some time for yourself this holiday season.
And I say that as a Windows guy who would love to get his hands on the beta.
