Is the above sonogram from a hardware JX8P?

Post

Nope, it is from Xhip, but most other synths hardware or software behave this way too as far as my ears are not folling me. :)
I'll check in Diva now.
[edit]
Diva does it a bit differently (it remembers the last pitch in HZ, not note pitch), but still it glides on all notes in the chord which gives the correct feel when playing poly portamento sounds, SQ8L does it just like Xhip, but has linear glide instead of logarithmic.

As far as my memory tells me, the JX-8P does not behave like that. I will try to do some experiments, if I find some time. The idea with the sonogram is good. So far I tried to trust my ears, but could not really work out what is going on in a polyphonic situation.

If you are 100% sure the hardware your synth is emulating behaves this way, then i'm OK with it.

But i'll post 2 examples of sounds where this style of portamento will not work.

Poly brass, attack part enhanced heavily by very short portamento.

First is how i like it with portamento on every note, then PG8X version with portamento only on notes of the first chord (it can be faked by envelope to osc pitch, but that would take away one onvelope).

And an epic long poly glide chord, if i want to repeat the same chord with the same epicness, PG8X will not cooperate (had to press some random notes all over the keyboard to force it to do the glides on the first chord). :)

First 2 is Xhip, second 2 is PG8X.
The timbre is of course epic on both synths. :)

I am not saying that the pg8x behaves correctly. In fact I know that it is still wrong. I just don't think the jx8p picks up at the previously pressed note. I will investigate this weekend.

OK, thank you. :)

OK. I think I figured out the algorithm the JX is using. Whenever the last key is released, the queue is reset, i.e. when playing one note only, it always triggers the same voice. Once the first voice is used, it uses round-robin for the remaining voices.

Just testing my implementation of that now...

Martin

hey, just wondering (and really don't want to go thru all the 136 pages to maybe find an answer...) - is there any reason why the AU is discontinued?

Yes there is, and it's not permanently discontinued, just on pause while some issues are sorted out, then Martin plans to get back to the AU version and bring that up to par, and sort out preset issues with the AU implementation.

thx for clarification :)

Hello Martin,

so I found a big bug, when you step through the sounds of a bank with the "next" or "prev"
buttons - after some steps, it will freeze the whole system....
(PIV, 3,2 Ghz, Win XP, SP3 - in VST Host (H. Seib))....
Ok - there´s that dropdown-menue, but if you choose those buttons, something strange
happens....especially if you want to go through the whole bank for play the sounds chronically....
Thanks....

Which version of VSTHost?
I know there was a major re-write a couple of years back, and some 'behaviours' are a little different (I won't call them 'bugs' - Hermann's pretty good at stamping on those before anyone can spot them!). But I've still got several versions hanging around somewhere, so I can fire up my old P4 and see if I can replicate - I normally use the buttons on my controller, and never had a problem.

(Was playing around with your CS-80R banks again only yesterday! Thanks! [Very underrated synth.])

[EDIT]
Same system (except slower P4!) - can confirm it freezes as you describe on VSTHost 1.47, 1.50 and 1.52; no problems with 1.53 or 1.54.
None of the really dumb people I knew when I was young are young any more.

Hello Syntilla,
Syntilla wrote:(Was playing around with your CS-80R banks again only yesterday! Thanks! [Very underrated synth.])
Happy to hear, that you like my soundbanks....surely you like my PG8x banks (from the real hardware)
too - but unfortunately they´re only available for the old (synthedit) PG8x yet....but someday....

So that´s the crux of the matter - I have VST-Host v1.47, cos with the newer versions I have problems
with the ZynAddSubFX-Vsti (for example)/the Solcita Musica Vsti´s or to give new patchnames on other synths at sound-patching.
I´ve been testing all the other and VST-Host 1.47 is stable in this way and the best version to me.....
Ok - the fault is on VST-Host then - but it´s only a little bug. I can use all the banks for the current
PG8x with the dropdown-menue and can select the patches....so no problem....
but thanks for your effort....

could we also get the polyphony parameter moved to the primary GUI?

Personally, I prefer not to have the polyphony on the main GUI. I was even considering for a while having it only in the pg8x.init file. If you want quick access, you can always map it to some Midi CC.

As for the bug reported by Armin, I cant reproduce them so far. But I am planning to spend some time in the next days for thorough testing, as most of the coding should be finished now. After more testing, I will release the next (and hopefully last) beta.

Till then, Happy new Year!

Martin
