If I would buy a StudioProjects B1 mic, do I have to buy a preamp too? I readed in the some websites that it is important to have one, but can a preamp be repleaced by VST plugins?

The problem is condenser Mics need 48v phantom power. So you cant connect them directly into a 1/4" jack. It would need to go through a pre-amp then. If your soundcard has pre-amps with phantom power then you dont need to get an extra one. Just connect directly into the soundcard.

Mic > preamp > soundcard.

No, a VST plugin can't replace a preamp.

The cheapest one available that I'm aware of is the Audio Buddy (decent sound too) which sells for around $100 USD. Or look around in the secondhand market. You might find a small mixer with preamps for not too much.

Check out this site, which is great at explaining what preamps/mixers/soundcards do, and how you're supposed to connect it all together.

You can also find the ART Tube MP for less than $100.
