Especially as it would be pretty easy for Steinberg to track the people down if they have names and a bank account, unless they're sitting on a carribean island or something... i know that there is this myth going on that they hired people who used to crack Cubase to do the copy protection for them, but i don't know... rather sounds like some sort of romantic cracker idolization.TheoM wrote:Acid Mitch wrote:Yes, the info file was credible. It accompanied one of the cracked versions of Cubase.chk071 wrote: And that sounds like a credible information to you?
This isn't the only place it was discussed.I only mentioned it was posted here so that anyone interested could search for it.
oh yes, because what info a CRACKER puts in an NFO file is credible
I wouldn't believe a word that comes out of their poisonus criminal mouths.

I imagine that there are plenty of these cracking groups that operate with a more nefarious scheme.
For instance, something like this is completely plausible.
1. Criminals hire hackers/crackers to crack a product or series of products.
2. They then pay them to create new virus/backdoor/spyware tools into their installers/keygens
3. They release the product to the world, and since many of these "thieves" aren't that smart they will most likely get infected. If enough people do this, then there is a good percentage of a financial return on stealing their CC Information, hijacking their computer with a cryptolocker deal, etc. With the cryptolocker deal, the thieves (downloaders) would most likely pay the ransom money since they don't want to go to authorities.
What makes this plan successful is that the people who download these products in a 0day release, will not have the ability to fend off a potential new virus which was designed for the purpose of infecting them along with the product that was cracked. Why? Because anti-virus/mal-ware developers will not have seen the virus yet until the day it gets released and people start getting infected.
This is one reason why i will never use warez..

I hope developers won't turn to C/R as an alternative method of authorization. I lost access to several discontinued software that way - most painful: Wizooverb. I would pick iLok any minute instead of C/R.

Are you actually taking this thread very seriously?szurcio wrote:I hope developers won't turn to C/R as an alternative method of authorization. I lost access to several discontinued software that way - most painful: Wizooverb. I would pick iLok any minute instead of C/R.

I don't think that this will happen. But C/R is IMO really the most intrusive and f*cked up C/P type on the market. I also lost a lot of tools in recent years due to that scheme, which let's me prefer USB keys, serials, watermarks and/or no C/P as well.szurcio wrote:I hope developers won't turn to C/R as an alternative method of authorization. Though one question comes to mind... if the C/R engine is busted, the dev dropped off the face of the planet, yet you paid your fair amount of money for it and want to continue using your plugin as long as you can... is it then adjusted to access a keygen?
A very ethical question indeed.
Spectrasonic once wrote that, should they ever go bust (which is highly unlikely at this point), they will release a global key that unlocks old tools without the need of a C/R server. Pity that other companies never talked or even thought about that. I mean, look for quick this can go. Example: TeamDNR's "hit and run", or the various losses in terms of developers throughout recent years due to early passing.
This is another reason why I think such threads should never(!) be locked/moved/deleted. We should be able to talk about this, address the issues it can cause. Not steer it OT or start building camps like "crackers are just criminals - end of story".
Copy Protection good and fine - but time has proven that this can cause more issues than good.
I mean - somebody still remembers the initial Tomb Raider (1996) video game release on PC?
The initial DOS CD release (yes, DOS!) had such a harsh copy protection, that the game crashed in the middle (you couldn't finish it - and Internet was not a "thing" back in the day, neither were active game patches) - and the audio tracks were cut off. IIRC, the faulty disks were printed in a brown tone, while the fixed reprints were in a green tone.
Then port this over back to the audio realm:
- crashing/vanishing C/R servers
- buggy license managers not properly connecting/syncing USB keys or licenses
- the "iLocalypse" (as hypernym) and the recurring issues with "removed licenses"
- patches for the C/P that disimprove the usability/functionality of the tool on question (I see this daily during beta testing)
Again - C/P schemes good and fine, but they should work and not be a hassle to the user (not to mention, developers - how much extra space are iLok "routines" eating again? How fast do the plugins load?!). Neither should they cost extra money for us.
So as bad as this whole situation is, I hope iLok learns from this rather than bleed us users dry once more (through extended arms with the developers that utilize this C/P scheme).
YMMV of course.
