The 64bit m/b is MSI K8T Neo (VIA Chipset)with AMD 3000XP. The 32bit ASUS A7N8X-X (Nvidia) with an AMD 3200XP. I now use an ABIT IC7-MAX3 with Intel 3.2. So far it works fine. Please note that it is the M/B chipset that SX doesn't like, not the cpu.

Okay thanks for the info! I've got the MSI K8N Neo FSR, the one with the NVIDIA nForce 250Gb chip. I'm running SX2, but it didn't give me troubles (yet). So hoping that won't bug on me in the future. ;)

Wow....loads of useful stuff - thanks.

So the general concensus is that AMD probably still have the edge in speed and probably price. And they don't run as hot as they used to (that is probably the thing that seals the deal for me then.) And 64 bit doesn't cost any more than 32bit? (and here, the nagging thought creeps in that the Steinbooger soon-to-be announcement after the upgrade suspension, will probably be something to do with SX3 - and that just might include 64bit processing?)

Hmmmmmmm................. So I probably should get a 64bit CPU just in case. But be wary about which chipset.

So here's probably a complete numbnut question..... won't 64bit processing half the speed of a super whizzbang CPU? So if I buy a 3.4GHz or whatever, then if I do anything in 64bit with a possible new SX (jeez....I've got to contemplate another upgrade only 2 days after I just bought one :roll: ) then the 3.4 will run at something more like 1.7GHz?
As you can see.....the gubbins inside PCs is not my strong point. :wink:
Although of course if I remain at SX2 at 32bit, then I'll get sooperdooper performance still.

And SSE2.....I thought you could jiggerypokery AMDs so that that's not a problem?

But basically - there's not likely to be any quantum leap in CPU power for the immediate future then? No Hexium around the corner yet?

No.

This is a terrible analogy (and not quite factually accurate), but it might help you understand what 64bit means in this case:

Imagine a processor as being like a road, with intersections.

The road itself is a rogh analogy of what in computer terms is known as a Buss. IE it simply moves thoings around without doing anything much else. The road be either 4 lanes (32bit) or 8 lanes (64bit).

The intersections are basically processing areas. There are traffic lights, flow controls, and traffic is rerouted. This is the CPU.

Now regardless of how many lanes there are, you can only drive as fast as the speed limit allows. Doubling the amount of lanes will clearly not slow you down in any way, but then, unless there is heavy congestion, it wont necessarily speed you up either.

The overall speed that traffic can move is determined by speed limit (clock speed), and by how eeficient the interchanges and traffic controls are (cpu architecture). A very fast road still crawls when going through slow toll booths. This is why Athlons can often outperform much faster (speed limit) P4s.

In the long run, widening an expressway will allow the expressway to perform better under load, but does not bring any benefit when traffic is light. Similar things are true of the 32bit to 64bit jump. Most of the performance gain with the newer 64bit processors comes not because they are 64bit, but because the architecure (those toll booths) is much more effeicient then the 32bit Athlons they are replacing.

Aha.....gotcha. Great explanation, ta :D - in PC terms I'm a complete f***ing moron. You plug it in, the hamsters turn the wheels, the little green men do the maths and out comes music.

OK, so a 64 bit one is deffo a good idea then, especially with a music PC that has heavy processing going on. And a 3.4 is still a 3.4 but with better go-faster stripes, shinier chrome bumpers and a trailer on the back to carry all the fat buggers. :wink:

Right....so I go to the computer man and ask for a fat shiney AMD with a bit of 64 please. :lol: :lol:

But don't forget, to take advantage of that 64-bitiness, you need a 64 bit OS. There is a 64 bit version for the AMD for XP. Also realize you'll need drivers for your devices for the 64bit OS too.

In short, it's still going to be awhile til it's all mainstream.

Thats a completely illogical comparison. The Athlon64 3500 is cheaper than a standard P4 3.4
by about 15$ if you shop well for both. And the p4 3.4 performs much better in that case.
the athlon 3500 woul beat the 3.4 p4 in vsti and plug in count. i'd bet anything on it :wink:
I bet you'd be pushing your luck with that. Seems to go back and forth, with the 3.4 beating the 3500+ and vice versa.
