xmas coming... and like every year i ask my self the same question...
for years i have been using the yamaha EX5 as a master keyboard. i don't use it for the sounds yet, though they're great. but i need another keyboard, just the master keyboard, not a synth. i check many keyboards available for purchase, none can be compared to the EX5 considering keyboard, key action, feeling.
it is not hammer type, but not a cheap plastic, initially a bit harder action, extremely smooth, just perfect for me, nothing like the nords, korgs, kurzweils or modern yamahas, not to mention novation or cheaper akais.
if anybody knows this keyboard and anything of comparable quality and feeling, please let me know. of course i haven't tested everything on the market, obviously. if nothing like that exists i will have to search for another ex5...

that may be a problem to find good substitution, the only keys as good as EX5 i came across was yamaha sy99 and korg T2 lol
you may consider step-up for a yamaha's balanced hammer action keyboard in some of their motifs, pleasure to play, hammer action but very lightweight, you can make all sort of recordings, really pleasure to play
that's the only thing i can say to help if ever...

There are likely other synthesizers of the same time of manufacture as the EX5 that have the same keybed.adn_01 wrote:xmas coming... and like every year i ask my self the same question...

A friend of mine and I a while back fixed a Korg Triton with a broken key - we found out going into that machine that the keybed was same one used years before in the M1 - it was clearly marked as such! So it's very likely that the keybed used in your EX5 is not exclusive to your synthesizer (and please keep in mind that Korg and Yamaha are related) -
Maybe it might be worth going into your EX5 just to take a look at the keybed, or: try to get a hold of a service manual for your synth that lists the parts.
Off the top of my head: some of the better keybeds were made by Peavey & Roland back in the day.
A suggestion for current keyboard controllers might be to take a look at the Studiologic VMK series -
I would be inclined to believe that this has a VMK keybed in it -
