DJ's need to have better timing than most drummers, they also need to know which tracks to build up the dancefloor, and which tracks that don't when the club owner wants punters to buy drinksT-CM11 wrote:I still don't get the need to confuse Disk Jockey with Producer/Composer/Musician. On paper it seems simple: To play the grammophone
But it aint

Still, nobody defines "drummer" as "the guy that programs his own drum sounds".Numanoid wrote:DJ's need to have better timing than most drummers, they also need to know which tracks to build up the dancefloor, and which tracks that don't when the club owner wants punters to buy drinksT-CM11 wrote:I still don't get the need to confuse Disk Jockey with Producer/Composer/Musician. I'm not saying it's (necessarily) easy, just that it was always about playing other people's music, not making it yourself.

You didn't put the grooves down on the wax, but you need to mix the platters in both time and key and volume/eq, while at the same time dodging punters wanting you to play their fav tracks.T-CM11 wrote:I'm not saying it's (necessarily) easy, just that it was always about playing other people's music, not making it yourself.
It takes a bit of effort

This is how it works:
Misty: A play on the Clint Eastwood movie Play Misty For Me, where he was a radio disc jockey
Punters haggling: Whenever you are in a dj boot trying to make that perfect mix, there is gonna be people interfering wanting you to play their special tune. It is a delicate business telling them off in a nice way, while trying to mix

I got that part, of course. Sometimes somebody even asks to play something that doesn't relate to the party... at all.Numanoid wrote:Punters haggling: Whenever you are in a dj boot trying to make that perfect mix, there is gonna be people interfering wanting you to play their special tune. I was just thinking of playing music for the love of music, or even just for fun... "making it somewhere" didn't even enter into my mind.ghettosynth wrote:Well, if we're getting all serious, first, my comment was a joke, and second, many, if not most DJs today are also producers. There's very little opportunity to make it anywhere as a DJ without also being a producer. There are exceptions, but, despite the fact that I hate x-step, neither Skrillex nor Mija are one.

But that is the worst part of trying to make it as a living: You need to play stuff that sucks to get paidT-CM11 wrote:I was just thinking of playing music for the love of music, or even just for fun... "making it somewhere" didn't even enter into my mind.![]()
Bowie said: I am the DJ, I am what I play
But does that pay the rent?

Well, everybody gotta have their own approachghettosynth wrote:If you were playing vinyl without beat-matching, then you were not a DJ in the same sense that I'm talking about. If that's your perspective then I can see where you would think that DJing isn't "making music", because you weren't making music, you were, in the words of Henry Rollins, "a record player player."
...and it is still x-mas eve
