IK Multimedia Miroslav Philarmonik is 49$ right now, at that price you have the full version, not the basic version. I bought it and made this track:

https://soundcloud.com/samplesciencemtl/epic-aeolian

All the instruments are from Miroslav Philarmonik, the percussions are from the G-Town Church Sampling Project and I've used one sample from the free Epic Trailer Sounds by Audio Imperia (downloaded from the 99 sounds website awhile ago). So far, I dig Miroslav, it's not of the EastWest Hollywood Strings and al. caliber, but it's good enough to create decent soundtracks. Combined with the aforementioned freebies I think it's quite complete.

I'm going to check Sampleism to see if I could find worthwhile addition to Miroslav. This way, a poor musician like me can have a decent sound palette for orchestral sounds. :phones:

Good for you. Never cared much for Miroslav, but Garritan Instant Orchestra seems to be at 30% off too.

That track sounds interesting. Not very conventional chord progressions.

As to the validity or whatever of the poll contingent on everybody "digging deep" into every option: I single out VSL for valid reasons for me. The three dominating in popularity are VSL, EWQL, and Albion. I'm pretty well informed on these three, and it's a fact that VSL is far better equipped in terms of articulations. And there isn't a single VSL sound, for example Appassionata Strings sounds very different than their original product as does Dimension Strings or Brass, so I donno what to do with "I've heard VSL". For instance, I looked closely at EWQL Hollywood and their M.O. here is a mess, the manual indicated to me I wouldn't bother.

As to brass, I think the happening product recently released is Tonehammer 'The Symphony Series Brass Collection'.

great interface, here they have appropriated (and expanded on in some ways) VSL's slots.

Thanks! :) I'm a beginner for this kind of music, for a first track in this genre I think it's decent. Still have a lot to learn though.

Here's a quick track made with Miroslav Philharmonik, this time it's the Clockwork Orange Theme. The sub bass is from AlgoMusic M42:

Layered, the harp sounds pretty good to me.

OP updated with 8Dio Majestica, Impact Soundworks Rhapsody and Orchestral Tools Metropolis ARK I. Wow, what a year for film and game composers in terms of new orchestral libraries! Yup, we got Albion One, but a real highlight for me has been that the smaller pros like Impact Soundworks and Soundiron have gotten into orchestral sampling with libraries like Impact's Rhapsody-series and Soundiron, with their Symphonic Brass.

Seems 2016 is going to be going literally even bigger and epic, with the year end-releases of METROPOLIS ARK I (we'll probably see ARK II in 2016?) and 8Dio Majestica. Looking forward to that.

Happy new year folks!

Updated Garritan Personal Orchestra 5 and Miroslav Philharmonik 2.

So, Spitfire's Albion, IKM's Miroslav Philharmonik and Garritan's Personal Orchestra have been upgraded to a new version. Do you think others will jump to this? Maybe a new edition of VSL?

And then, 8Dio and Impact Soundworks have released their own products. Perhaps Soundiron is next, since they already released a brass library? That'd be great.

Did a major overhaul and added VSCO2 and Cinematique Ensemblia. The list should be simpler now.
