4K TVs Used as Computer Displays

That 40" Phillips sure look's nice, and 40" is just enough for 4K,..

Even more interesting, it appears that the normal build-in intel HD4600 GPU, from f.eks. the normal daw-cpu 4790K supports 4K at 60hz

All it takes is a board with Displayport 1.2 such as a normal cheap Asus Z97-A, see last post in this tread

My 4770k has been running up2414q 4k 60hz over dp1.2 flawlessly in Win 8.1 for a year.
Motherboard is z87 extreme4/tb4.
Newest intel HD drivers even support 4k hardware acceleration.
I don't play 3d games but for desktop 2d work it is flawless.
I sold my GPU I don't need the extra heat and power draw

Besides saving a hot and consuming GFX the ability to build a compct micro-atx, or iTX system even, is apealing

So it seems the TV rage at CES is about HDR this year. 10-bit per channel color. That's pretty cool. It's definitely an improvement. It is quite easy to see banding on low a low level gray-scale gradient at 8-bit for example. Dither helps, but going to 10bit is definitely an improvement.

It will be cool to see how this can be used for desktop computing. 4-5K at 10bit color will make a pretty awesome desktop experience!

Going farther, the LG 98" 8K TV, at 120hz refresh and 16-bit color is basically Sci-Fi. If this is the "visual palet" of the future of desktop computing, the future looks bright indeed!

Maybe by 2020, it will cost $1k! This will basically be science fiction.

(and again, for TV/video needs it is really rather silly... but as a desktop computing display it is F-ing rad!! )

"computer monitor" is like the word "wedding" these days. It's a code word to tell vendors to charge 10 times as much of the same product/service.

I think you're right.
HDMI is basically DVI with audio, and probably some other video things. But the two specs are compatible.

I don't quite know... Probably yes. maybe no, maybe it's marketing bits? Not sure yet.

The Display Port 1.3 spec supports bit depth greater than 8-bit, and 2016 AMD/Nvidia cards supposedly support it too. There are a few computer monitors out there that claim to support it as well.

So it is coming soonish. Probably it will take Apple pushing it, and then everyone else will jump on board.

But I have no idea what would be needed to try to actually get HDR displays in audio plug GUIs. It will likely take years for all parts of the chain (OS, Host, video card, cables, displays) to place nicely...

But generally at the moment, it seems display tech is advancing more in TVs than desktop displays. But this is perfectly fine, since at the end of the day, what is a TV really? Strip out all the broadcast stuff, and the panel should basically be the same as PC monitor. If the TV has perfect color accuracy it is more or less a professional display. And even if it does not, it generally does not matter much purely for DAW use.

And there are more people out there watching TV than there are people making music in a DAW, so if they can help us get some inexpensive next gen displays, great!

One other possible issue/question is latency. TV displays are said to have some larger latency over standard computer displays and some gamers complain about it on the interweb. Although, this does not make complete logical sense since console games are connected to consumer TVs??

I think more and more the best desktop display at the moment is actually a 4K TV.

...although I do wonder if there are health issues involved to sit 18" away from a large display for 10-12 hours per day. That is something to research also.

Anyway, I find these topics quite interesting. Side project! for all my spare time. LOL.
