I'm not really looking to buy a hardware synth, but if i was, I would go for the MiniNova.

It's just got the perfect layout for me, small size factor, and sounds really fine

I'm pretty sure it'll be worth gold one day. Every mediocre analog hardware synth from 20-30 years ago is now.

Different tech. Old digital synths do not fare nearly as well and considering the Mininova relies on software for maximum utilization you are better off with a Creamware Noah EX. You can then stencil your own ugly mustache logo on it and know that at least your synth sounds really good.

Admittedly "worth gold" was a bit exaggerated, it surely won't fare as well as, say, a Virus to stick to digital synths. But sometimes i feel like people pay gold for anything old, even if it's the total cr**. Not that i think Mini- or Ultranova is crap, i like them, maybe not the best sounding VA's ever made, but at least they have that typical Novation character, and i like that spacey sound.

Anyway, my point is that while some digital "classics" retain their value or become more valuable, the hard truth is that most do not. Look at the Virus. No one is paying more for the original because it's "vintage." All Novation has to do is come up with an Ultranova 2 to send Ultranova prices in the dumps.

I don't think the Novas sound bad. I just look at them as oddly irrelevant. What do they really give you? Better sound than pure software? No. Awesome interface? No. Lot's of polyphony? No. The best thing I can think of is they give you the ability to gig without a computer but only after you've programmed your sounds with one. That's not nothing, but I think you'd be way better off with some ROMpler for jobs like that. I don't mean to pee on anyone's parade. I'm just trying to show a different perspective.

Your perspective is valid, but you're seeing things from the wrong angle, because you are not their target audience. That's why you don't get it, so to speak

There's a fierce competition in the hardware synth market between the top dogs for the lower segment. The software is putting them out of business and they NEED to come up with the cheapest options possible, in order to get some attention from the younger crowd. Big expensive polys don't sell by truckloads - cheap "toys" do

That aside, IMO the Mini simply kills. It's a proper synth for very little money. It has no competition in its price range - not that sound, for that ammount of money. Korg's roster is cool, but not quite there in terms of sound quality & features. This will prolly be my next one

If you need live vocoding and synth playing in one box, they are the best thing going right now. Studio-hounds might not see the value in them, but gigging musicians sure do.
