Receptor VIP-II Headphone Jack/Rear Outs Exclusivity?

I'm a new-ish VIP-II owner still working thru a few issues.

Am I correct in understanding that the front phones and rear output jacks are mutually exclusive?
In other words I have to unplug one to use the other? This has been my experience so far and is very inconvenient unless there's some work-around I'm unaware of.

Appreciate any input to troubleshoot my "output" issue
