I think perhaps Aether has multiple algos?

But back to Plate - very much looking forward to getting this with the money I hoping to get from Santa today. Might hold off a week or so for the new beta though as I'm on Windows..

Why wait? The current version is already awesome!

Because more is more.

You get more either way... but you can get some now ;-)

I didn't see the post you mention on Gearslutz but this interview with Tom Elmhirst (who mixed the majority of the album) sheds some light on the vocal effects used. It's an interesting read.

For those that don't want to read the article, it seems like most of the reverbs used were the chambers and plates at Capitol Recording in LA. The plates would be EMT140, but the chambers are totally unique to Capitol Recording. Mono input, stereo output chambers, with the left and right signals being taken from "lightly coupled" sections of the physical space.

The Valhalla recommendation for this sort of sound: ValhallaPlate. Use one of the new mono-in modes for the EMT140 sounds, or the Copper, Unobtanium, or upcoming Lithium mode for the reverb chambers. The chamber sounds in ValhallaPlate are kinda "plate chambers" in that they have dispersion, but they can have a high enough modal density to approximate real chambers.

I gotta fire up the Eventide DSP7000 and see what the "Canyons" preset that Elmhirst refers to sounds like.

It was a good read the article.
A timely reminder that most of the really intense work in making such an epic recording still relies upon using serious hardware.

IMO, the really intense work comes in developing a singing voice like Adele's. Put an SM58 in front of her, and she'll do just fine.

well yes, that is a 10/10 point, of course.
Nice to hear it captured in all its glory though :singer:

I guess I'll be buying this guy when I'm next in front of a real computer.

I agree. I'm sure if I were a big shot artist or producer, I would avail myself of the Capitol chambers as well. However, I think an equally excellent product could be crafted by someone who really knows what s/he is doing with ITB tools.

Most things that were initially seen as being obviously inferior to hardware (plugin reverbs, compressors, etc.) are now so good that it's very difficult to tell what has been used on a finished record. Even shootouts on GS are often inconclusive when comparing software with hardware.

Can't wait for the Windows beta Sean! I've been playing with it on my OSX machine at home but I like to also open projects on my Windows machine at work. It doesn't like it if I accidentally save the project with one of the new reverb modes! :o

Nothing beats real spaces for realism. Come on, let's be realistic about this.......

What does “realism“ even mean in a studio situation?

Post

Yup, you give that up the moment you use a microphone and start listening through two speakers.
Which, of course, can still sound great. Or shitty, in some cases. (I'm looking at you RHCP)

The interesting thing is that there are lots of real spaces that have a reverb which seem to be quite unrealistic.
I guess in a blind test there would be lot of confusion.
