wrt to the Toto thing (sorry to some in late!), I'm a big fan of theirs, I would go for Hydra and Isolation as my favourites... tho' Rosanna has the smoothest half-time shuffle you will ever hear.. their clarity and perfection is hardly surprising given their pedigree.

This takes your point to the extreme. I believe that the held-captive domestic music market in Japan (almost completely dominated by Sony Music) is the living incarnation of a 'free-music' hell.

As lame as Morning Musume and most of those other Hello Project "bands" are, that guy Tsunku can spit out a great pop tune every once in awhile... The last Aya Matsuura full-length CD is typical "idol singer" swill but I've got to admit that the "Ne?" single kicks ass! But what do I know? "Mini-moni Telephone Ring! Ring! Ring!" is one of my favorite songs of all time!

Actually, if anyone outside the 'Star Chamber' in Tokyo ever gets to hear Ayaka Hirahara's voice (Jupiter) they'll all call it quits. She is incredible - a tiny five-foot-one lady with a voice that would make most of the world's pop prima donnas wanna retire, she is that freakin good.

And you are spot on about Tsunku - I agree.

For all the rest, I think you know how it is - DEATH TO KAWAI!!!

I am starting to think that the differences between those of us who appreciate Toto and those who do not is maybe that those who do like them are usually live-gig musicians. Am I right?

This is in no way a put-down or delineation between live performers and studio guys, I have just noticed this over the years.

Guitar Jeff is also a live performer and almost all the other working hacks I know seem to have positive comments - in general - about Toto

That's a valid hypothesis. I'd say it holds true for me as I don't play live at all. Nor would I rate myself as much of a musician. It wouldn't help my case much to admit I sometimes have trouble tuning a guitar (I think that was an earlier qualifier). But I can't tune a piano, drums or violin either. I listen, and I've got little to gain by being dishonest with my opinions - so I hope that's good enough.

This is the strangest thread. Imagine if we'd picked any other band of that ilk - I'll hazard to say Journey, Foreigner, Survivor - I don't know... I wonder if the debate would have heated up as much.

It's just an observation - don't know if it's universally true, etc.

For me, comparing Toto to Foreigner, etc., is not apples to apples. My group actually opened for Foreigner at the Savanah Jam

They are Pros and they have 'their thing'. Personally I think they were nowhere near as tight, and by virtue of their song-structure, they aren't as complex and don't endeavor to be.

But their show was well-rehearsed - like a well-made spaghetti sauce - tasty and ya gotta love the flavor - but could have been a wee bit spicier... I think there is a difference you can feel as well as hear between the two.

Steve Perry has an awesome voice and vocal range, so Journey has had it's moments. Still, not apples to apples with regard to Toto (imho)

By the way - From listening to you and voting for you, I think You(tm) are a fine musician - and I think you know it.
