I remember back in my highschool days (mid 1970's) one of my friends was a total Bowie disciple, and dozens of the girls at school had Bowie cuts...
This was one of my favourites back then...

Thanks David, may you rest pain free finally."Moonage Daydream"
I'm an alligator, I'm a mama-papa coming for you
I'm the space invader, I'll be a rock 'n' rollin' bitch for you
Keep your mouth shut,
you're squawking like a pink monkey bird
And I'm busting up my brains for the words
Keep your 'lectric eye on me babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream oh yeah!
Don't fake it baby, lay the real thing on me
The church of man, love
Is such a holy place to be
Make me baby, make me know you really care
Make me jump into the air
Keep your 'lectric eye on me babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream oh yeah!
Freak out, far out, in out

What a life. I just saw the "5 years" documentary about his early career, and it was really just the tip of the iceberg.
A true visionary artist. He will be missed.

Also shocked when I heard it. Followed him through his career.
Very private person, don`t feel like I knew him at all.
Not what i`d call one who shared their inner private feelings in their music.Hard to connect with him along those lines because of that maybe.
To my knowledge, no one has ever produced an album while terminal. He didn`t use his opportunity to express what one might expect in music and lyrics. Heard the album once, still need to sort it out.
The first of the modern titans to retire.

The final cut on his final album (released on Friday): "I Can't Give Everything Away"
It sums up the sadness of the upcoming end, and also provides a phrase that described his career. You never quite knew who he was....but you knew he was brilliant.
It's amazing how many artists I like worked with him (Peter Gabriel, Moby, Pet Shop Boys, Robert Fripp, Philip Glass, etc.)
Heathen is one of my all-time favorite albums.
He will be missed.

I´m so convinced that David is still alive. He´s not just another mortal but somebody beyond our understanding of life. He will be forever among us. Discretely, watching and inspiring.. protecting the world from becoming too mediocre.

I did get...Black(vinyl)Star...and "I'm trying to, i'm dying to(o)"
I agree how he had so many personas and how private he was, I don`t know him other then his music.I am totally grateful for it, but I hold him as a person at a distance, unfortunately.
('I can`t give everything' - sounds like it came off of 'Black Tie White Noise'. Same beat.)

His different musical personas and directions made it difficult to piece together exactly who the man was. Was he this persona or that one? Is it all just an act and the real man is none of these? Is it all just his journey and he's bringing us along? Is it just a man with amazing creativity?
He's always had a bit of mystery, and I see that song title (and the lyrics to some extent) to be symbolic of that.
"I can't give everything away" meaning "I have to keep some parts of me to only myself."
That's the last song on an album he likely knew would be last because he was battling something that very few people knew.
I had more to say about it, but this article does a decent job of talking about it.

"The album's final track is a beautiful and moving farewell, with lyrics that speak of the mysterious aura that always surrounded the legendary musician, who remained an enigma until his final days and will remain one long after."

Concerning 'I can't give everything away' Now that i've looked into it somewhat, I can't see the hidden meaning. It appears to have much to do with issues of inheritance and a dying father. Appropriate maybe with his own family?

Despite liking a lot of things he did, I never actually owned a Bowie album (not sure why). But he was the kind of artist who was so woven into musical culture if you grew up during a certain time period that, even if you're not a huge fan, you can't help but respect what he contributed to the history of recorded music. I think of Bowie and I think of getting up in the morning to get ready for school with MTV on while having breakfast and seeing videos like "China Girl" and "Let's Dance" and "Ashes to Ashes" and being put in this sort of weird, surreal state of mind to start the day.
It's an odd feeling when one of the icons passes. It's as if our remembered youth is a melting iceberg and pieces of it keep breaking off and floating away.

It's still my favourite too and I'm very familiar with everything he's done. It felt like a maturing and a glimpse into his own personal feelings - his true self rather than through the personas. I'm still in disbelief - the last thing I expected to read when I woke up this morning.jsp1979 wrote:Heathen is one of my all-time favorite albums.

CNN has an appropriate headline:
PLANET EARTH IS BLUE
This took me off guard because he just released a strong, new album. I didn't realize it would be the final chapter.
