Mostly plugins. Off hand I cant remember, but some stuff by william K was for a while, revolverb... and of course cubase/nuendo's spoofing problems, which were caused by (botched) intel only optimizations... that happened to caused troubles on both platforms...

There are some large-scale theatre/concert applications that are Intel only as well.. but i doubt that matters to anyone here?

Heavy use of the floating point math which can cause intel's to hop behind a bit at times.... because both processors handle specific things very differently. Its very easy to make code that will perform badly on either processor... its all a big craphole.

in the end they're all even anyways...

hehe. I know what you're getting at ;)... but in the end it all dont matter anyways... while we're all hopping mad ranting about theory, speed, design... someone out there is *gasp* actually making music, or recording something else's music.

Well heres my two cents...
Ive produced alot of tracks on just about every combination of 'ghetto-tech' hardware and software imaginable (within reason of course ;). I do know that AMD,VIA,SiS and NVDiA are somewhat unreliable when pushing the envelope in audio production. Thats not so good when you are either performing with your computer or having to impress someone or retain your job etc. :?
Seriously I have observed AMD Processors crap out on a regular basis, but when thats all you have or all you can afford you roll with it. I have an Athlon XP 3200 in my main box right now and it runs. However, next month I am purchasing a Shuttle with I875 board and 2.8GHz P4 because for once I finally can. I know it sounds cliche, but get an Intel and then you wont have to worry about the 'what ifs' etc.
The best buy is either a 2.6 or 2.8 Northwood P4 which can be overclocked to 3.0/3.2 if you so wish to. You also dont have to worry about your damn heatsink and cooling like you do with Athlons which literally burn if they are run without a working heatsink. Pentium 4 CPUs will work (albiet at a somewhat reduced capacity) without a heatsink. I dont recommend it but... the world is chaos...
I have a few friends that have Athon64s and they seem to be having glitches with their configurations or what-have-yous. I would wait on those for another 6 months to a year.
Now if you cant afford a decent P4 or all you have is an Athlon or a Celeron, then you should realize that your work may run into some speed bumps. Typically Ive observed performance drops in realtime audio processing and synthesis. Best advice is to not put too much on your plate, distribute your load over time so that the system is not put in a real crunch. Because that will be when the conductive paste on your heatsink goes south and you toast your processor fireal. :P

AMD chips aren't the only toasty chip around, the newer P4 prescot cores are pretty damn toasty and i personally recommend northwood cores instead.

AMDs crap out? shouldn't any cpu crap out with enough stress? (assuming "crap out" means bringing the chip to a crawl) i have an old AMD rig right now with a via chipset (xp1800/via kt333), been running rock solid for almost two years now with no reliability issues and i have never got any software glitches with any host or plugins.


from my personal experience ALI and SIS chipset sucked ass but i don't know about via and nvidia chipset being inferior or unreliable, hell the best XP AMD boards that can be had are the nvidia nforces2 chipset based boards, most notably the ABIT NF7 S mobo. if you ask any hardcore overclocker they will tell you that the NF7 S is the cream of the crop for overclocking XP chip to the extreme. as far as VIA goes the PT880 chipset is the underdog of chipsets. hell, you can go out and get the MSI PT880 NEO motherboard and overclock the snot out of a P4 2.4A to speeds nearing 3Ghz with very stable results provided that you have quality ram and some robust cooling.

i think it all comes down to the user really. if you have good product then all it takes is for the user to take some dedication to configure his hardware as best as possible to get the most out of it.
